Registered Nurse - Stepdown ICU RN

Location: Orangeburg, South Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Details

  • Shift: 3x12 hour shifts, Nights (6:45 PM - 7:15 AM)
  • Patient Ratio: 1:4
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
  • On-call: No
  • Floating: Yes, within scope to like units/sister facilities

Experience & Licensure Requirements

  • Years of Experience Required: Minimum 1 year, 2 years preferred
  • Prior Travel Experience: Not explicitly required
  • License: South Carolina RN license or Compact license must be active prior to start
  • Certifications Required:
    • BLS (Basic Life Support)
    • NIH Stroke Certification
  • Certifications Preferred:
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
    • CPI (Crisis Prevention Intervention)
  • Special Requirements:
    • Epic electronic health record experience required
    • Telemetry competency required
    • Cardiac telemetry experience required
    • Previous charge nurse experience preferred

Required Documentation & Compliance

  • Background Checks:
    • Annual background check covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years
    • SSN Trace, Statewide, National Criminal, Sex Offender Registry, FACIS 3, EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG
  • Education Verification: Required
  • Licensure Verification: Primary source verification required; must be active and unencumbered
  • NURSYS Verification: Required for all RNs
  • Drug Testing: 10-panel drug screen within 90 days of start (no instant tests)
  • References: Proof of 2 clinical references or hospital evaluations
  • Employment History: Verification of last 3 clinical employers (or all if fewer than 3)
  • Photo for Badge: Clear, passport-style photo with solid light background, frontal view, business casual attire

Certifications & Competencies

  • Mandatory:
    • BLS (AHA or equivalent)
    • NIH Stroke Certification
    • Medication/Pharmacology Competency Exam
    • Color Blind Testing (prior to start)
    • Competency Exam
  • Preferred/As Applicable:
    • ACLS (AHA only) for adult critical care units including Stepdown
    • CPI
    • PALS (for pediatric units)
    • TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) - not required for ER RNs
    • IV Therapy Certification (for select LPNs)

Health & Immunization Requirements

  • Physical Exam: Initial and updated annually, attesting ability to meet physical demands
  • Fit Mask Test: Conducted onsite during orientation; facial hair must be trimmed/shaved
  • Vaccinations:
    • Tdap within 10 years or declination form required
    • Flu vaccine required during flu season (Aug 1 - Apr 30) or medical/religious exemption (no declinations accepted)
    • COVID vaccines highly preferred; vaccination records must be uploaded or declination form completed
    • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella: Positive titer or vaccination series required; boosters if low titer
    • Hepatitis B: Titer, vaccine series, or declination required
  • TB Testing: Negative T-spot or Q-Gold within 90 days of start; if positive, chest x-ray and annual questionnaire required
  • Drug Screen: 10-panel within 90 days of start

Orientation & Facility Specifics

  • Orientation Modules: Must be completed prior to start; estimated 4-6 hours for this location
  • First Day Instructions (FDI): Sent after clearance; includes OurDay login for module completion
  • Badge Photo Deadline: Photo must be submitted by Wednesday end of day prior to start
  • Emergency Response: Travelers may be assigned to emergency response teams during hurricane season (June-November)

  • Floating between like units/sister facilities is expected within scope.
  • Facility allows locals on a case-by-case basis.
  • Block schedule accommodations can be requested but are not guaranteed.

This position is ideal for RNs with at least 1 year of experience in stepdown or telemetry nursing, who are comfortable working night shifts in an acute care setting with a 1:4 patient ratio, and who have experience with Epic and cardiac telemetry.
