Job Description

  • Provide autonomous nursing care in an acute hospital setting, working alongside hospital staff.
  • Deliver acute hemodialysis to in-patients with chronic kidney disease, acute kidney injury (AKI), and transplant patients.
  • Patient-to-nurse ratio typically 2:1 or 1:1, providing 1:1 patient care.
  • Educate patients and families about their treatment and condition.
  • Manage complex care for patients with multiple co-morbidities and acute conditions requiring specialized treatment plans.
  • Provide nephrology care across multiple renal therapies including peritoneal dialysis, continuous renal replacement therapy, and apheresis.
  • Work independently, assessing and troubleshooting critical patient needs daily.
  • Schedule varies; expect long days, on-call duties, and a flexible schedule including mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must be able to travel to multiple hospitals within the area and be within a commutable distance for on-call requirements.
  • May float to various clinics during and after training.

Requirements

  • Experience: Minimum 1 year of recent (within last 2 years) acute dialysis experience.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule with mandatory overtime as needed.
  • Ability to work long days without prior notice.
  • Experience in assessing, troubleshooting, and making sound clinical decisions in stressful situations.
  • Physical ability to push/pull large hemodialysis machines with little or no assistance.
  • Basic computer skills, including proficiency in MS Word and Outlook.
  • Current and valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Illinois.

Preferred Qualifications (Not Required)

  • Hemodialysis nursing experience in acute or chronic settings.
  • Experience in Medical/Surgical (Med/Surg), Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Critical Care Unit (CCU), and/or Emergency Room (ER).
  • Certified Hemodialysis Nurse (CHN) credential.
