Labor and Delivery RN

Job Overview

Location: New Haven, Connecticut
Employment type: Per diem
Shift: Night shift, 12 hours, 7:00 PM–7:30 AM
Contract length: 13 weeks
Patient ratio: 1:2

Required Qualifications

Valid RN license in Connecticut
Labor and Delivery (2 years of experience)
Labor and Delivery experience within the last year
BLS - Basic Life Support issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
NRP - Neonatal Resuscitation Procedure issued by American Heart Association
Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
Trauma experience
Experience with Epic

Preferred Qualifications

ACLS certification
AWHONN Beginner certification
Experience in a teaching hospital
Experience in a Level I trauma setting
Experience with high-risk antepartum care

Key Clinical Skills

External and internal fetal monitoring
IUPC placement and calibration
Recognition and treatment of abnormal fetal heart rate patterns
IV starts and maintenance
Blood draw
Infusion pumps, drips, and IV monitoring
Management of common labor and delivery medications and therapies
Assistance with high-risk and vaginal deliveries
C-section circulation and recovery
Forceps/vacuum extraction support
Neonatal resuscitation and newborn assessment
Breastfeeding and lactation support
Foley catheter insertion and management
Postpartum assessment and care
Care for multiple births and postpartum hemorrhage

Schedule and Orientation

4 shifts per month required
4–5 days of orientation
Epic training is provided for candidates without Epic experience; experienced candidates may test out
Candidates must complete compliance items on time to avoid start-date delays

Additional Notes

Scrubs are provided
Flu declinations are accepted
COVID vaccination is not required
First-time travelers are accepted
Access to shifts is granted only after client clearance following orientation

Pros

Breaks became more strict towards the end of my contract. I didn’t care for management but the RNs i worked with on nights were great. You will only work L&D, never floated anywhere. Felt like with it being a teaching hospital providers were nice and patient with you most times.

Cons

Don’t have much of a say with scheduling. Their protocols for a few things are weird and different than a lot of hospitals. Can be pretty busy, may be coupled sometimes but not excessively.
