Job Opportunity: CVPICU Registered Nurse
Location: Charleston, South Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit Overview
- Pediatric Cardiology Intensive Care Unit (PCICU)
- 29-bed, Beacon Award-Winning unit
- Referral center for major pediatric cardiac surgery in South Carolina
- Average daily census: 26 patients
- Patient population: Congenital heart disease of any age
- Common procedures: Cardiac surgery, Ventricular Assist Devices (VAD), Heart Transplant, cardiac catheterization
- Advanced therapies: ECMO, CRRT, complex supportive therapies
- Pediatric palliative care available as needed
- Staffing includes RNs, Patient Care Technicians, Unit Secretaries, Respiratory Therapy, Pediatric Dietitians, Pediatric Pharmacists
- All beds are monitored
Work Schedule & Environment
- Shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7 PM - 7:30 AM)
- Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:1 or 1:2 depending on acuity
- Weekend requirement: 4 weekend shifts in a 4-week schedule, plus holiday rotation
- Floating: Yes, within scope to meet facility needs
- Cancellation: Traveler may be cancelled one shift every 2 weeks
- Travel pairs: Not accepted
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in South Carolina
- Minimum 2 years of CVPICU experience, including experience within the last year
- Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) experience
- Experience working with pediatric patients
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
Prior Travel Experience
- Not required
Required Documentation & Compliance
- Proof of 2 clinical references (hospital evaluations accepted)
- Complete employment application/resume including all PTO, contract assignments, agency names, and no unaccounted gaps
- Background checks including:
- 7-year work/living history
- SSN trace, state and national criminal checks, sex offender registry, FACIS 3
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks updated every 30 days
- Education verification or diploma/transcripts as placeholder
- Primary source license verification (active, unencumbered, no pending actions)
- NURSYS verification for RN licenses
- Drug screening: 10-panel drug screen within 90 days of start (no instant tests)
- Physical exam: Initial and updated annually, attesting ability to meet physical demands
- Fit test: N95 mask fit test within 90 days prior to start, renewed annually
- Immunizations and health requirements:
- Tdap within 10 years or declination form
- Negative TB test (T-spot or Q-Gold) within 90 days or proof of prior positive with chest x-ray
- Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) titers or vaccination/booster documentation
- Hepatitis B titer, vaccine series, or declination
- Varicella titer or vaccination/booster documentation
- Seasonal flu vaccine or medical/religious exemption (no declinations accepted)
- COVID-19 vaccination highly preferred; declination form required if not vaccinated
- Competency exams as applicable (medication/pharmacology, general competency)
- Color blindness testing prior to start
- Facility-specific orientation modules and first day instructions must be completed before orientation
- Clear, passport-style badge photo required before start

- Local candidates accepted within a 60-mile radius
- Block scheduling accommodations available at manager’s discretion
- Parking available with permit and fee
- This is a Level I Trauma Center, Teaching Facility, and Magnet Hospital
- Charting system: EPIC
This position offers the opportunity to work in a nationally recognized pediatric cardiac ICU with advanced therapies and a supportive multidisciplinary team. Ideal candidates will have strong pediatric cardiac ICU experience and appropriate certifications.
