Job Opportunity: OR Tech - Surgical Services

Location: Springfield, Illinois
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Details

  • Specialty: Surgical Services (OR Tech)
  • Shift: 5x8 Days (06:45 AM - 3:15 PM)
  • Average Daily Census: 50-60 cases/day
  • Weekend Requirement: Yes, once a month (16 hours total)
  • On-call Requirement: Yes, as needed for the department
  • Floating: Required within scope of practice to meet facility needs
  • Locals Accepted: No, must live more than 50 miles from facility
  • First-timers Accepted: No

Experience & Certifications

  • Years of Experience Required: Minimum 3 years in specialty
  • Prior Travel Experience: Not explicitly required
  • Certifications Required:
    • BLS (Basic Life Support) required
    • CST (Certified Surgical Technologist) preferred

Required Clinical Skills & Experience

Case Skills/Experience Required:

  • Ear, Nose, Throat (ENT): Direct Laryngoscopy, Radial neck dissection, Tonsillectomy/adenoidectomy, Tracheostomy
  • Endoscopic Procedures: Colonoscopy, EGD, PEG tube placement/exchange
  • General Surgery: Appendectomy, Cholecystectomy, Colon resection (Open/Laparoscopic), Hernia repair (inguinal/umbilical), Laparoscopic assisted procedures, Mastectomy, Partial/total Thyroidectomy
  • Gynecology: Abdominal hysterectomy, Anterior/Posterior repair, Bilateral tubal ligation, Dilation & Curettage, Laparoscopic assisted gynecological procedures, Vaginal hysterectomy
  • Neurosurgery: Craniotomy, Laminectomy/discectomy, Lumbar fusion
  • Oral Surgery: Repair of fractured jaws, mandibular and zygomatic
  • Orthopedic: Arthroscopy, Arthrotomy, Carpal tunnel release, Closed/Open reduction of fractures, Laminectomy/discectomy
  • Plastic Surgery: Free Flap - Microvascular
  • Trauma: Amputations, Gunshot/stab wounds, Motor vehicle accident (multiple injuries)
  • Urology: Cystoscopy, Laparoscopic assisted cases, Nephrectomy, Ureteroscopy
  • Emergency Management: Fire Safety

Equipment/Instrumentation Skills:

  • Drills (multiple types)
  • Electrosurgical units
  • Fiber optic light sources/cords

Professional Knowledge & Skills:

  • Aseptic Technique
  • Isolation Precautions
  • Radiation Safety
  • Sharps Safety
  • Specimen Handling/Labeling
  • Universal Protocol (Time out) Procedure

Scheduling & Other Requirements

  • Block Schedule: Possible, discuss with manager
  • Time Off: All time off must be approved by manager
  • Fingerprinting: Must be completed in Illinois 3 business days prior to start
  • Scrub Color: Provided
  • Charting System: Cerner
  • Parking: Permit required, no cost

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

  • Background checks including criminal, sex offender, and national databases within 30 days of start
  • Education verification required
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start, including labs within 7 days of contract signing
  • Fit mask test required (specific mask types accepted)
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year
  • Drug screening (9 panel) within 30 days of start
  • Immunizations or proof of immunity for Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
  • Flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required annually
  • References: 2 professional references required
  • Competency exam required for clinical candidates
  • Badge photo required before start
  • Various state-specific background checks and registry searches required within 30 days of start

“Management” (yes in quotes bc there isn’t much directive provided) is incredibly cliquey, if you’re on the right side of things it’s great! If you are not, they will speak behind your back to other employees, as they want to be in on all of the supposed tea, without worrying about finding out the truth first.
