Registered Nurse (PCU) - Travel/Contract Position

Location: Kansas City, Missouri
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Details

  • Specialty: Registered Nurse (PCU - Progressive Care Unit)
  • Ratios: 1:5 patient-to-nurse ratio
  • Experience Required: Minimum 2 years of nursing experience (higher value confirmed)
  • First-time Travelers: Accepted
  • Weekend Requirement: 8 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule period (Friday/Saturday/Sunday combination)
  • Floating: Regular floating between departments, units, and facility as needed
  • Block Schedule: Not accommodated
  • Local Candidates: Not accepted (must live at least 75 miles from facility)
  • Pending License: Not accepted
  • Return to Office (RTO) Restrictions: No more than 7 days
  • Guaranteed Hours: 3 shifts per 13 weeks (cancelled shifts must be regular shift length)

Certifications Required

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)

Skills and Competencies Required

  • Work Settings: Medical-Surgical/Telemetry, Telemetry, Cardiac Telemetry, ER Holding, Neuro Stepdown, PCU/DOU/IMC/Stepdown
  • Cardiac Monitoring & Emergency Response:
    • Interpretation and management of dysrhythmias
    • Telemetry monitoring (unit and remote)
    • Use of Rapid Response Teams
  • Cardiovascular Care: Post cardiac events, angiogram, MI, pre/post cardiac catheterization and surgery
  • Endocrine/Metabolic: IV insulin protocols
  • Gastrointestinal: Feeding tube care and management
  • Genitourinary/Renal: Pre/post hemodialysis management, renal failure care
  • IV Therapy/Phlebotomy: Blood product administration, central line care/management, phlebotomy, peripheral line care, PICC line management, IV starts
  • Medications: Heparin protocols, cardiac drips management (no titration), PCA, procedural sedation administration, titration of cardiac drips
  • Neurological/Psychiatric: CVA care
  • Orthopedics: Peripheral nerve block catheters, total joint replacements
  • Plastics: Surgical drains
  • Respiratory: Chest tubes (Emerson/Pleur-evac), external CPAP/BIPAP, high flow nasal cannula (HFNC), nasal cannula, oxygen face masks, non-invasive airway management, tracheostomy management
  • Professional Skills: Isolation precautions, wound care/wound vac

Compliance and Documentation Requirements

  • Government-issued ID required
  • Criminal background check within 6 months (7-year search including statewide, nationwide, sex offender, and international if applicable)
  • Quarterly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks
  • Education verification of highest nursing degree required (no pending at start)
  • Fingerprinting required for Illinois long-term care or rehab units
  • Primary source verification of professional nursing license (Missouri licenses verified via NURSYS)
  • Various state-specific background checks and registries as applicable
  • Medication test/pharmacology competency exam as applicable
  • Color blind testing within 12 months of start
  • Unit-specific competency exams, including dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam (80% pass rate required)
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start
  • Fit mask (N95) testing and annual renewal required
  • Immunizations and titers: Tdap, TB testing (2 negative PPDs or equivalent), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella (with boosters or declination as applicable)
  • Drug testing within 1 year of start, must include specific panels and be valid throughout assignment
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season (09/30 - 04/01)
  • Various facility-specific documents including HIPAA acknowledgement, latex allergy questionnaire, confidentiality form, regulatory compliance education, hepatitis B declination, TB questionnaire, hand hygiene, fingernail, and dress code policies
  • Orientation modules (~16 hours) required prior to start unless completed within last 6 months or 1 year as specified
  • References: Two professional references required (supervisors preferred)

Additional Notes

  • Floating between units and departments is expected within scope of practice
  • No on-call shifts required
  • Must be able to work holiday shifts and charge RN assignments as needed
  • Must comply with all facility policies and complete required training and documentation prior to start

This position is ideal for a Registered Nurse with at least 2 years of experience, comfortable with telemetry and progressive care unit skills, and willing to commit to a 13-week travel contract in Kansas City, Missouri.
