Registered Nurse – Medical Surgical

Location: Battle Creek, Michigan
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Night (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each; 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
Hours per Week: 36 hours (option for 48 hours available)


Unit Description

  • Medical Surgical, Oncology Unit with 37 beds
  • Patient population includes general medical diagnoses and surgical patients specializing in gastrointestinal, urological, and gynecological surgeries (e.g., hysterectomies, mastectomies)
  • Additional patient types: ortho/neurovascular, cardio/pulmonary
  • Staffing ratio typically 1:5-6 at night; may flex to 1:8 with LPN support
  • Floating to other Med Surg units approximately once per week, depending on need
  • Work every other weekend
  • No guarantee of block scheduling
  • Must be willing to work with a variety of staff (RNs, LPNs, Techs, etc.)

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Michigan
  • Med Surg experience of at least 1 year within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • ACLS certification
  • PALS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
  • Orientation Safety Manual Acknowledgement

Certifications & Competencies

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) – AHA only
  • Advanced certifications (ACLS, PALS, NRP, CHEMO, TNCC, EFM, ENPC, NIH Stroke, CPI) may be required depending on unit assignment (refer to unit-specific requirements)
  • Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam within 1 year prior to assignment start, passing score ≥ 80%
  • Competency Exam in specialty within 1 year prior to assignment start, passing score ≥ 80%

Health & Immunization Requirements

  • Physical exam within 1 year of start
  • Negative TB test (PPD or Q Gold/Tspot) within 30 days of start; if positive, chest x-ray and TB questionnaire required
  • Annual TB questionnaire update required
  • Proof of Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccine (at least one prior Tdap)
  • Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella: 2 vaccines or positive titer required; exemptions not accepted
  • Hepatitis B: titer, series, or facility declination required
  • Seasonal Flu vaccination or approved medical/spiritual exemption required for candidates starting after November 1; proof or exemption must be submitted by December 1
  • 10-panel drug test including Marijuana/THC within 30 days of start (instant/rapid acceptable if full panel)

Background & Compliance

  • Criminal background check within 45 days of start, including lifetime search from age 18
  • Monthly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required
  • Education verification (copy of highest degree or diploma)
  • Michigan LARA fingerprinting required within 45 days of start for certain positions (not typically required for this RN role unless specified)
  • Michigan Central Registry Clearance required only for specific pediatric, respiratory, L&D, and echo tech roles (not applicable here)
  • One professional reference from a supervisor or manager required
  • Complete employment application/resume with full 7 years work history, no gaps

Facility & Assignment Specifics

  • Must float to other Med Surg units as needed
  • Holidays are required; holiday time off cannot be guaranteed
  • Government-issued photo ID required
  • Must review and sign facility Code of Conduct and Appearance Standards Policy prior to start
  • Fit testing required if working onsite (specific to certain roles; confirm if applicable)
  • Various facility-specific forms and acknowledgments may be required (e.g., vaccine exemption forms, safety manual acknowledgment)
