Surgical Technologist - Operating Room

Location: Lincoln, Nebraska
Employment Type: Traveler - Backfill
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: 7:00 AM – 5:30 PM
Hours per Week: 40


Job Summary

The Surgical Technologist is a key member of the perioperative team, responsible for preparing and maintaining the operating room environment to ensure safe surgical procedures. This role involves assisting perioperative nurses, anticipating surgeon needs, managing surgical instruments and supplies, and adhering to aseptic and infection control standards. The technologist functions primarily in the scrub role and does not perform first assist or incision closures but may apply skin staples and dressings under supervision.


Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare, organize, and anticipate instruments, supplies, and equipment for surgical procedures.
  • Assist with perioperative patient care including transporting, positioning, and instrument counts.
  • Pass surgical instruments and supplies safely and efficiently in the OR and labor & delivery rooms.
  • Handle and prepare medications for use on the sterile field under direct supervision.
  • Manage tissue and fluid specimens appropriately.
  • Participate in unit activities, staff meetings, and committees.
  • May float to a nearby OR location (approx. 3 miles away).

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience as a Surgical Technologist, including experience within the last year.
  • Associate's Degree in Surgical Technology or successful completion of a formal Surgical Technology program (on-the-job training not accepted).
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
  • Prior travel experience required.

Work Environment & Equipment

  • 7-room surgical suite.
  • Use of advanced surgical equipment including Storz video systems, Stryker drills, Leica microscopes, cautery machines, and specialized surgical beds and positioners.
  • Electronic charting systems and OR technology utilized.

Additional Information

  • Scrubs provided; no shoes with holes allowed.
  • Some on-call duties may be required depending on surgical volume.
  • Orientation includes hands-on training focused on common cases during the first week.

This position offers an opportunity to work in a dynamic surgical environment with a focus on orthopedic procedures and requires a dedicated, experienced surgical technologist ready to support a multidisciplinary team.
