ER Nurse

Overview

Travel contract for an experienced ER nurse in Oxnard, California. The assignment is 13 weeks, with 12-hour evening shifts and 36 hours per week.

Required Qualifications

• Active BLS
• ACLS
• PALS
• NIHSS
• California RN license
• 2 full years of ER experience

Preferred

• FirstNet Cerner experience
• Prior travel experience

Unit Details

• ER unit
• 22 beds, plus 8–10 hallway beds if needed
• 170–210 patients per day
• 1:4 typical ratio, depending on acuity
• Fast track area available
• 24/7 charge nurse
• RT available 24/7
• Pharmacy available 24/7
• No IV team

Clinical Expectations

• Travelers are not allowed to triage
• Travelers will not be allowed to perform conscious sedation unless competency testing is completed
• Must follow up on PO meds within 1 hour and IV pain meds within 30 minutes
• Swallow screens are emphasized for stroke patients
• Sepsis boluses and bundles are emphasized
• May need to draw labs when CT staff are short

Schedule and Float

• 12-hour shifts with variable start times, most often 1300–0100 and 1500–0300
• Every other weekend, possibly more
• Holidays rotate with permanent staff
• Floats to ER at SJPVH

Additional Notes

• Cerner First Net is used in the ED
• Navy scrubs required
• 2 days of floor orientation
• Common patient types include psych, stroke, TPA, sepsis, STEMI, and conscious sedation cases
• STEMI receiving facility and stroke center
• Trauma cases are transferred out
