Job Opportunity: Med Surg RN - 4N Ortho-Neuro Unit

Location: Parkersburg, West Virginia
Unit: 4N Ortho - Neuro (33 beds, all private rooms)
Contract Length: 13 weeks (approximately 3 months)
Shift: 12-hour shifts (07:00-19:30 and 19:00-07:30) with a 30-minute lunch break
Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend (Night shifts: Fri/Sat/Sun; Day shifts: Sat/Sun)
Holiday Requirement: Based on unit needs; travelers may be required to work holidays if permanent staff coverage is insufficient
Floating: Required; travelers float first to any MedSurg units, possibly Tele with patients within skillset


Unit Details

  • Patient Ratio: 1 RN to 6 patients
  • Common Diagnoses: Elective surgeries (hips, knees, shoulders), fractures from falls, back & neck neuro-surgeries, general MedSurg cases
  • Required Experience: Must have experience with ortho patients and PCA pumps
  • Certifications Required: BLS (AHA) and WV or compact nursing license
  • EPIC Experience: Required
  • Drip Management: RNs do not titrate drips; common drips include IV fluids and PCA pumps (no heparin or other drips)
  • Charge Nurse: 24/7 coverage; day charge may take patients if needed, night charge always takes a full patient assignment
  • Patient Care Techs (PCTs): Usually 2-4 PCTs depending on staffing; duties include vitals, FSBS, ADLs, and Foley catheter discontinuation
  • Respiratory Therapy Equipment: CPAP, BiPAP, High Flow available and managed by RT
  • Telemetry: Remote telemetry monitored by another floor; RNs do not read strips

Orientation & Scheduling

  • Orientation: 1 day EPIC training, 1 day floor orientation with preceptor, 3rd day working independently
  • Scheduling: Permanent staff self-schedule; travelers scheduled based on unit needs; block scheduling allowed if unit needs are met
  • Call/Standby: May be called off for low census depending on contract specifics
  • Dress Code: Royal blue scrubs required; scrub jackets allowed only if royal blue, no hoodies or sweatshirts

Additional Notes

  • All submittals must include an unexpired copy of the candidate’s driver’s license
  • Time-off requests should be noted during prescreening
  • The area offers proximity to outdoor activities and cultural attractions, including ski resorts within 2 hours

This position is ideal for RNs with ortho and neuro Med Surg experience looking for a 13-week assignment in a supportive environment with a manageable patient ratio and a variety of orthopedic and neuro cases.
