Job Opportunity: Night ICU RN – Cardiac ICU

Location: Grand Island, Nebraska
Contract Length: 13 weeks (approximately 3 months)
Shift: 12-hour night shifts (0630-1900, 1830-0700)
Guaranteed Hours: 36 hours per week
Unit: Medical Surgical Cardiac ICU
Beds: 16
Nurse:Patient Ratio: Typically 1:2, occasionally 1:1 for higher acuity patients (e.g., TPA, balloon pump, crani recovery)
Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
Holiday Requirement: As needed
Floating: Mainly to PCU, but may float to other hospital areas depending on skills

Patient Population & Care

• Patients range from young adults to geriatrics
• Common diagnoses: sepsis, STEMI, COVID, stroke, neurosurgery, renal failure, respiratory failure, COPD, cancer, DKA
• Equipment and therapies used: Gaymar Hypothermia, Arrow Balloon Pump, Camino Neuro monitoring, CRRT, Impella, EVDs, Lumbar drains
• RNs are required to titrate drips including sedation, paralytics, pressors, antihypertensives, heparin, insulin
• RNs must read and interpret telemetry strips
• Respiratory therapy equipment includes nasal cannula to ventilators; RNs troubleshoot vents but do not manage beyond that
• Charge nurse present on each shift and takes patient assignments
• Nurse aides/patient care techs available at a ratio of 1:10

Orientation & Training

• Unit-specific orientation: 2 shifts
• RN skills exam during orientation (open book, must pass with 90%)
• Fast-paced environment with eICU remote monitoring system
• Emphasis on bedside shift report and intentional hourly rounding
• Encouragement for critical thinking and willingness to learn new skills
• Culturally diverse patient population including non-English speakers (Hispanic and Sudanese communities)

Required Certifications & Licenses

• Registered Nurse (RN) license valid in Nebraska
• BLS (Basic Life Support)
• ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
• NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale) certification

Experience Requirements

• Minimum 1 year of unit experience in Cardiac ICU
• Prior travel experience is not explicitly required

Additional Requirements & Policies

• Must have a valid driver’s license at time of submission (used to verify candidate is within 50 miles radius)
• Candidates may not be currently employed full time, part time, or PRN with any facility associated with CommonSpirit (including CHI and Dignity)
• Artificial nails are prohibited in all patient care areas; refusal to comply may result in contract termination
• Return to Office (RTO) required within 7 days of contract start; no additional RTO approvals after submission
• Scrub color: Navy Blue for RNs
