Registered Nurse (Neuro Stepdown & Epilepsy Monitoring Unit)

Location: Morgantown, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Unit Overview

• Unit: Neuro Stepdown & Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU)
• Beds: 31 total (25 Stepdown, 6 EMU)
• Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:

  • Stepdown: 1:3
  • EMU Floor: 1:5-6
• Charge Nurse available 24/7
• Nurse Aides: 4 per shift (Ratios 1:8-9)
• Respiratory Therapy available 24/7; RNs not required to have vent experience
• Telemetry available; RNs do not read strips

Patient Population

• Higher acuity neuroscience patients
• Common diagnoses: Stroke, Seizures, Craniotomies, EMU patients
• Experience with EVDs preferred (usually assigned to permanent staff)
• Post-TPA patients managed by permanent staff only

Required Certifications & Skills

• BLS Certification (required)
• NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) Certification (required at time of submission)
• ACLS preferred
• EPIC experience required
• Strong neuro nursing experience, especially stroke care and NIHSS implementation

Clinical Information

• Drip titration done only by physician orders; some protocols may allow RN titration with education
• Common drips: Amiodarone, Cardizem, Nitro, Dopamine, Nipride, Ketamine, Lasix, Bumex, Insulin
• Floating may be required to other units (7E, 7W, 7NE, or 10W)

Scheduling

• Night shifts: 3 shifts of 12 hours (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
• May allow 3 consecutive shifts but not guaranteed; flexibility required
• Weekend requirement: Every other weekend or 2 weekend shifts per schedule
• Holiday shifts required as part of rotation

Orientation

• Unit-specific orientation: 2 shifts on unit, 12 hours per week
• Includes holidays and weekends as scheduled

Additional Requirements

• Fully COVID vaccinated (2 Moderna/Pfizer shots or 1 J&J) or approved exemption
• Driver’s license address must be outside 50 miles from facility
• Previous permanent candidates must have been gone for 2 years
• Previous travelers must have been gone for 2 years after 1 full year assignment
• Only one submission allowed at a time across the system
• Disclosure of any license issues required at submission

Required Qualifications Summary

• Registered Nurse license
• BLS and NIHSS certifications (NIHSS required at submission)
• Strong neuro nursing experience with stroke care
• EPIC electronic health record experience
• ACLS preferred but not mandatory
