Job Summary
ICU RN position in a small hospital with a 7-bed ICU unit. The ICU includes a "Main" ICU (7 beds with ventilators) and a COVID ICU (22 beds, including vented patients). Candidates must have experience with ventilators and tracheostomies due to the acuity of COVID patients. Possible float to Medical-Surgical and Progressive Care Unit (PCU) with weekend rotation and no on-call.

Required Certifications
- Florida RN License
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) — must be obtained at the earliest reasonable opportunity
Preferred Certifications
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
- TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course)
Experience Requirements
- ICU experience required
- Must have ventilator and tracheostomy experience
- Experience with critical care drips, including sedation drips
- No PICU experience required, but some pediatric care may be involved (very sick pediatric patients are transferred out)
- LTAC experience may be considered if combined with strong ICU skills
Work Environment & Patient Care
- ICU nurse-to-patient ratio goal: 1:2 (rarely higher)
- PCU/Regular COVID unit ratio: typically 1:4, occasionally up to 1:5
- Patient diagnoses include COVID-19, DKA, sepsis, pulmonary edema, CHF, COPD, flu, acute abdomen, abdominal perforation, post-op care, minor traumas, hypertensive crisis
- No CNAs in ICU or COVID ICU; CNAs used in PCU and regular COVID units
- RNs may be asked to perform CNA duties if overstaffed; flexibility required
- Monitor techs usually available, but RNs must be able to read and interpret cardiac strips
- Respiratory therapists available 24/7 to manage vents, EKGs, breathing treatments, and ABGs
- Pharmacy services available 24/7
Shifts & Scheduling
- 12-hour shifts: 7am-7pm and 7pm-7am
- Weekend rotation: every other weekend
- Holiday work integrated into permanent staff rotation
- Block scheduling may be possible but not guaranteed
- Floating required between ICU, PCU, and COVID units; consistent and equitable floating policy
Orientation & Training
- Orientation includes training on Omnicell medication system, CPSI EMR, and SCU unit procedures
- Badge and HR processing included in orientation
Additional Notes
- Scrub colors: Navy or black; green scrubs provided for COVID units (must be returned after each shift)
- The ICU director is a "working manager" and is available 24/7 along with other leadership resources
- Flexibility and adaptability are essential due to fluctuating patient admissions and COVID-related challenges
