Location: Omaha, Nebraska
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: 12-hour shifts (0630-1830, 1830-0630)
Hours Guaranteed: 36 hours per week
Job Description
Seeking experienced ICU Registered Nurses for a fast-paced medical surgical ICU unit. This is a tertiary care hospital with a 34-bed ICU. The unit cares for adult and pediatric patients over 15 years old with a variety of critical conditions including neuro surgery, respiratory failure, ARDS, MODS, sepsis, stroke, cardiogenic shock, renal failure, general surgery, psych/OD, GI bleeds, and cancer-specific surgeries.
Patient Care & Unit Details
- Nurse-to-patient ratios:
- ICU: 1:1 to 1:2
- PCU: 1:4 to 1:5
- Med Surg: 1:5 to 1:6
- Common equipment and procedures:
- CVPs, arterial lines, Swan-Ganz catheters, ICP monitoring
- Respiratory equipment from nasal cannula to ventilators
- Use of Zoll Thermoguard for hypothermia protocol
- Bell Mont rapid transfuser
- RNs are required to titrate drips including vasopressors, paralytics, narcotics, sedation, and antiarrhythmics
- Charge nurse present on each shift and participates in rapid response teams and codes
- Patient care techs available with a ratio of 1:18
- No telemetry techs; RNs must read and interpret cardiac monitor strips (Draeger system)
Orientation & Training
- Unit-specific orientation: 2 shifts
- RN skills exam during orientation (open book, must pass with 90%)
- Real-time training provided for specialized equipment and procedures
Scheduling & Requirements
- Scheduling determined by unit manager based on needs
- Weekend requirement: every other weekend
- Holiday requirement: 2 out of 3 major holidays or every other holiday as needed
- Floating required to all inpatient units except Maternity/NICU
- Dress code: Navy blue scrubs
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years recent ICU experience
- Certifications: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS
- Valid driver’s license required at submission (used to verify candidate location within 50-mile radius)
- Must comply with fingernail policy: artificial nails prohibited in patient care areas
- Must pass RN skills exam during orientation
Additional Notes
- Candidates cannot be currently employed full time, part time, or PRN with certain affiliated health systems within a 50-mile radius
- Fast-paced environment requiring critical thinking, teamwork, positive attitude, and willingness to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including attendings, fellows, and residents
- Prior travel experience is not explicitly required
