Unit Information

• Unit: Med-Surg Cardiac Medical Unit (Dept 61506)
• Number of Beds: 23 (with 1 treatment room)
• Staffing:

  • Day Shift:

    • 1 CNC/Charge Nurse
    • 6 RNs
    • 2 PCTs
    • 1 MT
    • 1 Department Coordinator (until 7 PM)
  • Night Shift:

    • 1 CNC/Charge Nurse
    • 5 RNs
    • 2 PCTs
    • 1 MT
• Patient Ratios:

  • Days/Eves: 1 RN to 4 patients
  • Nights: 1 RN to 5 patients

Equipment and Technology

• Type of Equipment:

  • Telemetry monitoring (some rooms hard-wired)
  • Vein finder for IV therapy
  • Portable pulse oximetry and continuous oximetry
  • Manual/automatic vital sign machines
  • Blood glucose monitors
  • Mechanical lifts
  • Dopplers
• EMR System: Allscripts with medication scanning capabilities

Patient Population

• Cardiac Medical Patients:

  • Hemodynamically stable MI
  • Acute/chronic heart failure
  • New onset Afib (with or without RVR)
  • Stable dysrhythmias
  • Procedural patients (e.g., cardiac caths without interventions, ablations, cardioversions)
  • Patients requiring cardiac drips (e.g., Amiodarone, Diltiazem, Dobutamine)
• Additional Patient Populations:

  • ICU transfers
  • Neuro patients (CVA)
  • Pulmonary patients requiring Bipap and Hi-flow

Required Skills and Certifications

• Must-Have Skills:

  • Cardiac telemetry knowledge
  • ACLS certification
  • Knowledge/skill set for cardiac medical and procedural patients
• Preferred Skills:

  • Strong medical-surgical background with telemetry

Typical Procedures Performed

• Cardiac caths (Left/Right, femoral/radial approach) without intervention
• Pacers, ablations, cardioversions, EP studies
• Administration of cardiac drips (e.g., Amiodarone, Diltiazem, Dobutamine)
