Job Description
- Prepare and assist with operating room setup tailored to patient age and surgical procedure.
- Knowledge of surgical pathology, allergies (including latex), and preparation of special equipment such as implants and prostheses.
- Anticipate surgeon needs by having supplies opened or readily available, coordinating with circulating nurse.
- Maintain accurate counts of sponges, needles, and instruments according to policy.
- Assist in specimen care and labeling.
- Scrub, gown, and glove in accordance with recommended practices and OR policies.
- Conduct instrument inventory counts and ensure no instruments are lost.
- Maintain equipment and supplies through inspection, cleaning, and proper care.
- Set up back table, instruments, medications, and supplies according to surgery type.
- Utilize technical skills to implement the plan of care with minimal exceptions.
- Comply with unit policies on sterile and contaminated instrument handling.
- Operate sterilizers and verify sterilization conditions.
- Complete all unit-based competencies related to surgical technology.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of 2 years of experience as a Surgical Technologist, including experience within the last year.
- Certification as a Surgical Technologist (CST) from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or certification from the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT).
- Completion of a surgical technologist educational program or operating room/surgical training from the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, or Public Health Service.
- Proficiency with steam sterilization systems.
- Proficiency with ethylene oxide (EO) sterilization systems.
- Proficiency with low-temperature sterilization systems.
- Proficiency with washer/disinfector operations.
- Proficiency with ultrasonic cleaners.
- Proficiency with biological and chemical indicator testing.
