Job Summary
The Respiratory Therapist (RRT) provides advanced respiratory care to diagnose, evaluate, treat, manage, and control cardiopulmonary system deficiencies or abnormalities under physician orders. Acts as a resource to CRT staff and may lead special clinical projects or assignments as needed.
Responsibilities
- Perform, interpret, and evaluate diagnostic testing procedures, including obtaining arterial gases.
- Oversee and troubleshoot respiratory equipment for optimal patient care.
- Initiate respiratory protocols and interventions based on assessments.
- Administer medications safely and timely; evaluate and re-evaluate effects per protocol.
- Communicate patient progress to staff, physicians, and other departments.
- Monitor assigned patients’ overall condition and make appropriate care recommendations.
- Educate patients and families on health promotion, wellness, and self-care techniques.
- Complete documentation accurately according to departmental standards.
- Monitor supplies and equipment; notify appropriate personnel when issues arise.
- Utilize time effectively to meet productivity standards, including during low census periods.
- Participate in quality and patient safety initiatives; identify and address potential safety hazards.
- Contribute to departmental meetings with ideas and feedback.
- Promote the respiratory care profession; serve as a resource, consultant, and mentor.
- Engage in quality improvement and research activities to develop patient care standards.
- May float to other departments within competency and qualifications.
- May be required to be on-call during scheduled shifts.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
