Respiratory Therapist (Registered Respiratory Therapist)

Job Summary

Provide comprehensive respiratory care across multiple areas including adult critical care, general medical floors, Emergency Room, Pulmonary Function Laboratory, Radiology, CT, and during ambulance transports. Support seriously ill patients and participate in emergency respiratory care and diagnostic procedures.

Key Responsibilities

• Administer physician-prescribed respiratory therapy treatments with understanding of indications, contraindications, complications, and expected outcomes.
• Set up, monitor, and manage mechanical ventilators for patients requiring respiratory support.
• Deliver oxygen therapy, humidification, nebulizers, aerosols, and Chest Physiotherapy (CPT) per orders or protocols.
• Perform pulmonary function testing (PFT) including Flow Volume Loops, DLCO, Nitrogen Washouts, and other specialized studies.
• Assist with airway management, intubations, and emergency respiratory care.
• Participate as an active member of the CPR/Code Blue team.
• Perform and assist with diagnostic procedures such as EKGs, stress testing, Holter monitoring, EEGs, and arterial blood gas draws.
• Maintain accurate patient records, treatment documentation, and billing for respiratory services.
• Communicate patient information and recommendations to physicians, nurses, and interdisciplinary teams.
• Provide patient and family education on respiratory conditions, treatments, medications, and equipment use.
• Monitor and evaluate therapy effectiveness and adjust treatments as needed.
• Clean, maintain, and calibrate respiratory equipment ensuring proper function and infection control.
• Observe and enforce safety rules, infection control policies, and hospital emergency plans.
• Contribute to departmental policy development, quality improvement, research, and in-service education.
• Assist with patient transports (ground and air) and provide respiratory support in Radiology and CT.
• Demonstrate age-specific competencies for neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.

Required Qualifications

• Valid Respiratory Therapist license in New Mexico
• Minimum of 1 year of recent respiratory therapist experience within the last year
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
• High School Diploma or GED equivalent
