Registered Nurse – Neuro Med-Surg Acute
Location: Peoria, Illinois
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights (12-hour shifts)
Hours per Week: 36
Unit Overview
- 54 beds (mostly semi-private)
- Nurse-to-patient ratios:
- Day shift: 1:4-5
- Night shift: 1:5-6
- Patient types: Stroke, spine surgery, seizure, brain tumor, head injury, neuroscience cases, some medical overflow
- Telemetry monitors (Phillips brand) are house-wide; nurses do not read their own strips
- Respiratory equipment: High flow oxygen for stable COVID patients (rare) – RNs troubleshoot only
Required Certifications & Skills
- BLS (AHA)
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Level 1 trauma experience required
- Prior experience on a dedicated neuro unit required
- Previous travel nursing experience required (no first-time travelers)
- Experience with heparin titrated drips based on PTT required (RNs must titrate drips)
Staffing & Support
- Charge nurse present 24/7; generally does not take patient assignments unless short-staffed
- House supervisor available 24/7
- Patient care techs/nurse aides on unit with ratios:
- Days and evenings: 1:9-10
- Nights: 1:10-12
Scheduling & Time Off
- 12-hour night shifts
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend (Saturday and Sunday both shifts count as weekend)
- Holiday requirement: Every other holiday
- No call or standby requirement
- Floating:
- Rotates with general unit staff
- If floated outside general unit, assigned only to skills nurse is competent in and paired with trained nurse
Orientation & Policies
- Unit-specific orientation: 2 days (includes computer training, unit procedures, and precepted patient care)
- Drug-free workplace: Negative drug screen required for all panels
- Dress code: No scrub color requirement; tattoos must be covered; only ear piercings allowed
- Local placements accepted within 50-mile radius
Submission Requirements (for recruiters)
- Last four digits of clinician’s SSN
- Clinician’s middle initial
- Requested time off
- Active Illinois nursing license or proof that application is in process
