Job Opportunity: PCU Registered Nurse (RN) - Night Shift

Location: Kearney, Nebraska
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Details

  • Shift: 12-hour night shifts (1830-0630)
  • Hours Guaranteed: 36 hours per week
  • Unit: Progressive Care Unit (PCU)
  • Beds: 40 beds (average daily census 24)
  • Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:4-5 (days and nights)
  • Patient Population: Adults with cardiac med/surg, dialysis, cancer, vascular issues, sepsis, respiratory conditions, stroke, post stent, post pacer placement, renal failure
  • Common Procedures: RNs required to titrate drips such as Heparin, Nitro, Dopamine, Cardizem, Amiodarone, insulin
  • Additional Duties:
    • Competency in Arterial Lines required
    • RNs must read and interpret telemetry strips
    • Troubleshooting high flow respiratory equipment (e.g., High flow oxygen)
    • Floating to MedSurg or ICU to care for PCU acuity patients
  • Support Staff:
    • Charge nurse present on each shift and takes assignment
    • Nurse aides/patient care techs with a ratio of 1:12
  • Orientation: 1 day of unit-specific orientation
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
  • Holiday Requirement: Minimum of 2 holidays during contract
  • Dress Code: Navy blue scrubs
  • Additional Equipment: Overhead lifts in half the rooms, portable lifts, vein finders, bladder scanner

Required Qualifications

  • Experience: Minimum 2 years of unit experience in PCU or similar setting
  • Certifications:
    • BLS (Basic Life Support)
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
    • NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
  • Licensure: Valid RN license for Nebraska
  • Competencies: Must be competent in arterial line management and drip titration
  • Testing: Pass/fail exam during orientation with a minimum score of 90% (open book)

Additional Information

  • Candidates must not be currently employed full-time, part-time, or PRN with any facility associated with CommonSpirit (including CHI and Dignity)
  • Artificial nails are prohibited in all patient care areas; refusal to comply will result in contract termination
  • Driver’s license required to verify candidate’s location within a 50-mile radius
  • Prior travel experience is not explicitly required
  • Floating to other units (MedSurg or ICU) is expected
  • Cultural competency: Unit serves diverse populations, primarily Hispanic and Somalian
  • Emphasis on teamwork, flexibility, adaptability, and good communication skills
  • Return to Office (RTO) required within 7 days of contract start; no additional RTO approved
