ICU Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position

Location: San Francisco, California
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 25 weeks


Job Description

  • Float pool position: ICU RNs will float across all Transitional Care Units (TCUs), ICUs, Emergency Department (ED), and Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU).
  • Must be able to float to multiple facilities and departments within the system.
  • Rotating 12-hour shifts (day and night) on a 4-week schedule cycle; shifts may switch between cycles based on need.
  • Experience with ECMO, IABP, Impella, LVAD, CRRT, and PA Catheters preferred for faster placement.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in California.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU), with ICU experience within the last year.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association.
  • Ability to float to other UCSF facilities and departments.

Preferred Qualifications

  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification.

Work Schedule

  • 12-hour shifts, 3 shifts per week (36 hours/week).
  • Day shift: 7:00 AM – 7:30 PM
  • Night shift: 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM

Required Documentation & Compliance

  • Current and valid government-issued photo ID matching professional license.
  • Background checks including 7-year criminal history, EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG, sex offender, and education verification.
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start, including physician statement of fitness to work.
  • Drug testing: Standard 9-panel (excluding THC) within 30 days of start, renewed every 2 years.
  • Immunizations and titers:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (within 10 years, no declinations accepted except medical exemptions)
    • Two negative TB tests (PPD, QuantiFERON, or T-Spot) with specific timing requirements.
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella (IGG titer or 2 vaccines required)
    • Hepatitis B (titer, series, or declination)
    • Varicella (IGG titer or 2 vaccines required; history of disease not accepted)
    • Seasonal flu vaccine or facility-specific declination (required during flu season)
  • Fit mask test within 1 year of start (specific approved masks required), with onsite fit testing available as last resort.
  • Pass/fail Telemetry and Medication competency exams required on first day of orientation.
  • Annual competency exams and core training modules with passing scores of 80% or higher.
  • Completion of facility-specific learning modules prior to or during orientation.
  • COVID-19 vaccination is strongly recommended but not required as of current policy.

Important Notes

  • Return-to-Office (RTO) time must be submitted at time of offer; late submissions will not be considered.
  • Candidates must complete all required training modules and certifications before or during orientation as specified.
  • This is a float pool role, not unit-based; flexibility and adaptability to multiple units and patient populations are essential.
  • Candidates must be prepared for pass/fail testing on telemetry and medication knowledge on the first day.
  • All background checks and verifications must be current and completed within specified timeframes prior to start.

Additional Requirements

  • Current and updated resume covering the last 7 years of work history; gaps of 30 days or more must be explained.
  • Unit-specific skills checklist updated annually.
  • Annual TB questionnaire and other health screenings as required.
  • Completion of cybersecurity and HIPAA training modules with passing scores.
