Registered Nurse (MS/Telemetry) - Travel/Contract
Location: Wilmington, North Carolina
Contract Length: 16 weeks
Job Summary
- Night shift (18:45 - 07:15), 4 shifts per week, 12 hours each (48 hours/week)
- Patient-to-nurse ratio: 1:6
- Float requirement: May be required to float to a main campus 32 minutes away
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend
- No call requirement
- Must be able to work holidays
- Return to open (RTO) maximum: 7 days
- Contract staff may be assigned to Storm/Hurricane Teams and may be required to work during catastrophic events or disasters
- Unit orientation: 24 hours
- Self-scheduling
Patient Population / Diagnoses
Includes but not limited to:
- Diabetes, dementia, COVID, pneumonia, COPD, sepsis, encephalopathy
- GI bleed, anemia, hip fracture, congestive heart failure (CHF), urinary tract infection (UTI)
- Various surgical recovery cases, renal failure, hypertension, cellulitis, failure to thrive
Required Skills & Experience
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Carolina
- Minimum 2 years of Med Surg / Telemetry nursing experience, including experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
- BLS certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Management and interpretation of dysrhythmias
- Use of Rapid Response/Code teams
- Bowel obstruction care
- Pre/Post Hemodialysis management
- Central line blood draws
- PICC line management
- Patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) management
- Chest tubes (Emerson/PleurEvac) care
- BiPAP/CPAP management and maintenance
- High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC) management
- Non-invasive airway management
Preferred Skills & Experience
- ACLS certification
- Telemetry on-unit monitoring
- Post angiogram, post cardiac surgery, post myocardial infarction care
- IV insulin protocols
- Bariatric surgery care
- Continuous bladder irrigation (CBI)
- Accessing/managing ports
- Cerebrovascular accident (CVA) care
- Substance withdrawal management
- Surgical drains care
- Interpretation of arterial blood gases (ABGs)
- Pre/Post thoracic surgery care
- Tracheostomy care/management
- Previous charge nurse experience
- Electronic documentation proficiency
- Community hospital experience
Certifications Required
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Must pass EKG/Dysrhythmia competency testing prior to start (minimum 82% score required)
Licensing
- Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license valid in North Carolina
Additional Requirements
- Must be able to pass EKG testing prior to start
- Navy blue or white scrubs required
- Photo ID (passport or driver’s license) required for badge issuance
- Must complete various facility-specific education and compliance modules prior to start
- Drug screening within 6 months of start required (9-panel acceptable)
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year of start (or proof of past positive TB with appropriate documentation)
- Required immunizations or titers: Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
- Flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season
- Background check within 6 months required for clinical candidates
- Must complete medication safety training and other mandatory facility compliance trainings
- Must provide emergency contact and complete confidentiality agreement
- Must upload a passport-style photo on a solid white background for badge creation immediately after signing contract
- Must complete Non-Novant Health Worker Clinical Education Checklist (approx. 8-10 hours) for North Carolina travel candidates
- Must complete annual compliance and facility-specific mandatory education
Orientation & Onboarding
- 24-hour unit orientation required
- Must complete facility-specific onboarding including medication safety and confidentiality agreements
- Must complete competency exams including medication test/pharmacology and dysrhythmia/EKG competency within 72 hours of start
- Must complete color blindness testing within 1 year prior to start
Work Environment & Other Notes
- May be required to float to a different campus approximately 32 minutes away
- Contract staff may be reassigned mid-contract based on facility needs
- No block schedules except weekend blocks
- Must be able to work holidays
- Self-scheduling with every other weekend off
