Job Opportunity: PCU Registered Nurse (Renal) – Travel/Contract
Location: Kansas City, Missouri
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
- Position in Progressive Care Unit (PCU) with a renal specialty focus.
- Day shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (6:45 AM – 7:15 PM).
- Patient ratio typically 1:5; may flex to 1:6 occasionally, with travelers expected to take extra patients.
- Floating between departments, units, and facilities may be required within scope.
- No on-call required.
- Holiday shifts and Charge RN assignments as needed.
- Weekend requirement: 8 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule period (Friday/Saturday/Sunday combination).
- Home address must be at least 75 miles from the facility (locals not accepted).
- First-time travelers accepted.
- No block scheduling accommodation.
- No pending licenses accepted.
- Return to work restrictions: no more than 7 days off.
- Guaranteed minimum of 3 shifts per 13 weeks.
Required Experience & Skills
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Missouri.
- Minimum 1 year of recent Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience.
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
- Minimum 2 years of experience in renal nursing with emphasis on:
- Renal transplant care
- Peritoneal dialysis catheter (PD Cath) care
- Hemodialysis and dialysis procedures
- Management of drains
- Total parenteral nutrition (TPN) administration
- Wound care
- Diabetes encephalopathy management
- Acute renal rejection care
- Thymoglobulin (thymo) administration
- Experience with transplant and dialysis patient care.
- BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association.
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale) certification.
Required Certifications
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
- Additional certifications may be required per unit (e.g., ACLS, PALS, TNCC) – verify with unit-specific requirements.
Licensure
- Must hold an active Registered Nurse (RN) license valid in Missouri.
- No pending licenses accepted.
Compliance & Background Requirements
- Government-issued ID required.
- Criminal background check within 6 months, including statewide and nationwide searches, sex offender registry, and international searches if applicable.
- Quarterly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required.
- Education verification of highest nursing degree required before start.
- Fingerprinting required for assignments in Illinois long-term care or rehab units (not applicable here).
- Drug testing within 1 year of start, covering a comprehensive panel including amphetamines, benzodiazepines, cocaine, opiates, and others; must remain valid throughout assignment.
- Physical exam within 1 year of start.
- Fit mask (N95) testing required annually.
- Immunizations and titers required:
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year (two-step PPD or equivalent).
- Measles, mumps, rubella, varicella immunity or vaccination/declination as applicable.
- Tdap vaccine or declination required.
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season (Sept 30 – Apr 1).
- Annual completion of facility-specific regulatory compliance education and HIPAA acknowledgement.
- Completion of facility-specific orientation modules (~16 hours) through online platform required before start.
Additional Requirements
- Two professional references required; supervisors within the last year preferred.
- Unit-specific skills checklist required within 1 year of start. Oncology skills checklist required if assigned to Med Surg-Oncology unit.
- Competency exams required: medication/pharmacology, dysrhythmia/EKG, and unit-specific competency exams.
- Adherence to facility policies including dress code, hand hygiene, fingernail policy, and confidentiality.
- Badge photo required (head and shoulders, white background, no obstructions, taken within 6 months).
