ICU Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position
Location: Saint Louis, Missouri
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Details
- Employment Type: Travel/Contract
- Shift: Night (4 shifts of 12 hours each, 19:00 - 7:30)
- Weekly Hours: Up to 48 hours (can sign for 36 or 48 hours per week)
- Patient Ratio: 1:2
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
- Floating: May float within ICU service line units
- Local Candidates: Not accepted (home must be at least 75 miles away)
- On-call: Not required
- Block Schedule: Not accommodated
- Return to Office (RTO) Restrictions: No more than 7 days
- Guaranteed Hours: 3 shifts per 13 weeks (cancelled shifts must be regular shift length)
- First-time Travel Nurses: Not accepted
Unit & Patient Population
- ICU setting including Medical and Surgical Intensive Care Units
- Patient Diagnoses:
- Respiratory failure/ARDS
- Acute chest pain, cardiac arrhythmias, cardiac arrest
- Stroke, DKA, multi-organ failure, sepsis
- Unit Details:
- Pre- and post-operative cardiac, thoracic, abdominal surgeries
- Medicine and neuro-medicine overflow
- Pre- and post-transplant care
- End of life and organ donation care
Required Skills & Competencies
- Medical and Surgical ICU experience
- Interpretation and management of dysrhythmias
- Management of multisystem organ dysfunction/failure
- Obtaining 12-lead EKG/ECG
- Central Venous Pressure (CVP) and Pulmonary Artery Line/Swan Ganz monitoring
- Management of arterial lines, blood product administration, central line and PICC line care
- Starting and maintaining IVs, continuous IV sedation
- Emergency medication administration
- Titration of cardiac and vasoactive drips
- CVA/acute stroke management
- Ventilator and BiPAP management, respiratory failure care
- Interpretation of arterial blood gases (ABGs)
- Suctioning (ETT, NT)
- Infection prevention and isolation precautions including PPE use
- Phlebotomy
- Care of surgical wounds with drains and wound vac
Required Certifications & Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Missouri
- Minimum 2 years of ICU (Intensive Care Unit) experience, including experience within the last year
- Basic Life Support (BLS) issued by the American Heart Association
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
- National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
Required Licenses & Experience
- Registered Nurse license valid in Missouri (pending licenses accepted)
- Minimum 2 years ICU experience required (highest stated requirement)
- Prior travel experience: Not accepted (first-timers not allowed)
Health & Compliance Requirements
- Physical exam within 1 year of start
- Drug testing within 1 year of start, must include specified panels and remain valid throughout assignment
- Fit mask testing (N95 respirators) with annual renewal
- Immunizations and titers:
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (or declination)
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray with yearly TB questionnaire
- Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella immunity or vaccination/declination (with unit-specific exemptions)
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season (09/30 - 04/01)
- Hepatitis B declination required (vaccination not mandatory)
Background & Screening
- Criminal background check within 6 months, including:
- Statewide searches, MO Highway Patrol check, sex offender registry, nationwide and international if applicable
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG quarterly checks
- Education verification of highest nursing degree
- Fingerprinting required for Illinois long-term care or rehab float assignments (not applicable here)
- State-specific exclusion and abuse registry checks as applicable
Documentation & Onboarding
- Government-issued ID required (driver’s license for home health not applicable here)
- Employment application and professional references (2 professional references preferred, supervisors within last year ideal)
- Unit-specific skills checklist within 1 year of start
- Competency exams and medication/pharmacology competency as applicable
- Facility-specific documents including:
- HIPAA acknowledgement
- Latex allergy questionnaire
- Confidentiality form
- Regulatory compliance education (annual quiz with 80% passing score)
- Hand hygiene, fingernail, and dress code policies
- Orientation modules (approximately 16 hours, required for all RNs)
- Badge photo (head and shoulders, white background, no obstructions, taken within 6 months)
- Vehicle registration form if working day shifts (not applicable for night shift)
