Registered Nurse – Medical/Surgical Telemetry Unit (Night Shift)
Location: Columbus, Ohio

Job Summary
- Work on a Medical Oncology unit caring for adult and geriatric patients with solid tumor cancers (e.g., breast, lung, prostate, pancreatic, colon, esophageal cancers).
- Patient care spans from new diagnosis through treatment and end-of-life care.
- Staffing ratios aim for 1:4, occasionally 1:5.
- Variable weekend shifts based on unit needs.
- No set/blocked scheduling; self-scheduling requests are submitted and balanced by management.
- Orientation includes one week of day shift classroom training (Mon-Fri) followed by 36 hours of on-unit precepted orientation.
- Floating to other MedSurg Oncology units is required.
Shift Details
- Night shift: 7:00 PM to 7:30 AM (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each)
- Total hours per week: 36
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Ohio.
- Minimum 2 years of Med Surg / Telemetry nursing experience, with experience within the last year.
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association.
- Oncology nursing experience.
- Experience with Epic electronic charting system.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous travel nursing experience preferred but not required.
Patient Population
- Adults and geriatrics.
- Diagnoses primarily include various solid tumor cancers and patients receiving antineoplastic chemotherapy.
- Patients may have concurrent medical-surgical issues.
Compliance and Background Requirements
- 7-year criminal background check including FBI and BCI fingerprinting required prior to start.
- Education verification confirming graduation from an accredited nursing program (CCNE, ACEN, or NLN CNEA).
- Monthly monitoring through EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG databases.
- Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug test within 3 months of start.
- Physical exam within 1 year of start confirming good health and freedom from contagious disease.
- Immunizations and health documentation required:
- Tdap (adult dose)
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year
- MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccination or positive titers
- Varicella vaccination or positive titer
- Hepatitis B titer or vaccine series (declination acceptable)
- Seasonal flu vaccine or declination during flu season (10/1 - 3/31)
- Fit mask testing required annually for inpatient/patient-facing roles.
- Annual review and acknowledgment of dress code, hand hygiene, ethics, and compliance policies.
- Fraud, waste, and abuse training certificate required prior to start and updated annually.
Competency Requirements
- Medication/pharmacology competency exam prior to start.
- Unit-specific competency exam.
- Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required within 1 year of start and updated annually (minimum passing score 76%).
- Orientation safety manual acknowledgment required annually.

- Two professional references required; at least one must be from a manager or formal leader.
- Employment application required, including education verification.

- Heavy focus on infection prevention protocols and patient fall prevention.
- Candidates must be flexible with scheduling and floating to other oncology med-surg units.

- Fingerprinting must be completed using specific state codes and within one year of start date.
- Pending background check attestation required if fingerprint results are pending at start.

Units are nice, staff are kind. Single patient rooms with 4:1 ratios day and night on med surg.
Cons
Scheduled every weekend, floated for the first 6 weeks of contract every shift. Not traveler friendly even though they say they are. Staff are treated well not travelers.
