Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (Med/Surg) - Chicago, IL

Position Details

  • Specialty: Registered Nurse (Med/Surg)
  • Location: Chicago, Illinois
  • Employment Type: Travel/Contract
  • Contract Length: 13 weeks
  • Shift: 3 shifts of 12 hours each (7:00 PM - 7:30 AM), no block scheduling
  • Guaranteed Hours: 36 hours per week
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend (2 weekends per month)
  • Return to Office (RTO): Maximum 5 days off, no more than 2 consecutive days; no time off allowed on holidays, the day before or after holidays, or weekends
  • Float Requirement: Mandatory float within scope to meet facility needs

Experience & Certification Requirements

  • Experience: Minimum 2 years recent acute care experience in Medical/Surgical nursing
  • Certifications Required:
    • BLS (Basic Life Support)
    • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
  • Certifications Preferred:
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)

Additional Requirements

  • Locals Accepted: Yes, locals preferred (must live within 75 miles of the facility)
  • Pending License: Not accepted

Required Documentation & Compliance

  • Identification: Government-issued photo ID (color or black & white, clear and legible)
  • Background Checks:
    • Within 12 months, covering all locations lived/worked/schooled in past 7 years
    • Includes SSN trace, nationwide sex offender, OFAC, and other standard checks
    • International background check if applicable (lived/worked internationally in past 7 years)
  • Employment Screening: EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start
  • Health Documents:
    • Physical exam within 12 months, signed by PA, NP, DO, or MD
    • Fit mask test (N95 or equivalent) within 1 year, required annually
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccine within 10 years or signed declination
    • Negative TB test (QGold or TSPOT) within 12 months, updated annually (PPD not accepted after 12/15/2025)
    • Immunizations: Measles, Mumps, Rubella (2 MMR vaccines or positive titer with booster if low titer)
    • Hepatitis B series, titer, or signed declination within 1 year
    • Varicella (2 vaccines or positive titer with booster if low titer)
    • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption during flu season (Oct 1 - Apr 1)
    • Negative 9-panel drug screen within 90 days of start, updated annually
  • Competency Exams:
    • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam (required within 12 months of start)
    • Color blind testing (required within 12 months of start)
    • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam (for EKG techs and preferred for ER RNs)
  • Facility-Specific Forms: Must complete updated HIS forms relevant to RN role prior to start

Certifications Specific to This Facility

  • NIH Stroke Certification: Required for all RNs in Med/Surg and other critical care areas; must be updated annually
  • BLS: Required for all nursing staff
  • ACLS: Preferred for Med/Surg RNs
  • Other Certifications: PALS, NRP, CHEMO, EFM as applicable to specialty areas (not required for this Med/Surg role)

Notes

  • This is a mandatory float facility; all staff must be willing to float as needed within their scope.
  • No call requirements.
  • Locals preferred but travel nurses are accepted if within 75 miles.
  • No holiday time off allowed.
  • References and employment application required per agency standards.

This position offers an opportunity to work in a Level 1 Trauma Center with a structured schedule and clear certification and compliance requirements. Ideal candidates will have recent Med/Surg acute care experience and required certifications ready for immediate start.

I like floating to different departments so working una variety of settings was a big plus

Cons

The parking, I feel they should provide an ability for travelers to pay for parking per month even if at a slightly higher cost compared to staff
