Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Job - Roanoke, Virginia

Position Details

  • Specialty: Registered Nurse
  • Location: Roanoke, Virginia
  • Unit: 8MPCU (Hospitalist Unit / General Medicine PCU)
  • Shift: 3x12 hour nights (6:45 PM - 7:15 AM)
  • Contract Length: 13 weeks
  • Patient Ratio: Currently 1:5, goal is 1:4
  • Floating: Travelers expected to float to other PCU units and potentially Med Surg as needed
  • EMR System: EPIC experience required

Scheduling & Time Off

  • All requested time off (RTO) must be submitted upfront with application
  • No Christmas time off approvals

Local Traveler Rules

  • Eligibility based on distance from address on driver's license
  • 50-99.9 miles: Eligible for one 13-week assignment, no extensions
  • 0-49.9 miles: Eligible for one 13-week assignment, no extensions; local pay rate applies (not included here)

Required Documentation & Compliance

  • I-9 or attestation
  • Driver’s License/State ID: Must be provided within 48 hours of signing; address used to confirm eligibility radius (must be >100 miles away to avoid cancellation)
  • E-Verify or attestation
  • Residency Declaration Form: Required if working on a compact license
  • 7-year Background Check: Must cover all locations lived/worked in past 7 years; new check required if break in assignments >30 days
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks: Required within 30 days of start and updated for renewals
  • Education Verification: Highest earned degree verification required; transcript/diploma may be accepted as placeholder if needed
  • References: 2 clinical references required (hospital evaluations accepted)
  • Employment Application/Resume: Required
  • Skills Checklist: Must be updated annually

Certifications (AHA Only, as applicable by unit)

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Procedure)
  • TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course)
  • CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) - Required for Behavioral Health & ER Behavioral Health Annex
  • State License Primary Source Verification (within 30 days of start)
  • NURSYS Verification (for RNs, within 30 days of start)
  • NIH Stroke Certification (check unit requirements)

Competencies

  • Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam (as applicable)
  • Competency Exam (as applicable)
  • Core Parts I, II, III (for subcontractors; HIPAA form or core testing required, updated annually)

Health Requirements

  • Physical Exam within 1 year, confirming freedom from communicable diseases
  • Fit Mask Test within 1 year, updated annually (not required for students)
  • Negative TB test (PPD, QGold, or TSpot) within 1 year, updated annually; if past positive, clear chest X-ray and annual TB questionnaire required
  • TB Questionnaire required for all candidates
  • Immunizations or positive titers required for:
    • Rubeola (Measles)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Hepatitis B (titer, vaccine series, or declination)
    • Varicella
  • Drug Testing: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start (instant acceptable)
  • Flu Vaccination: Not required but mask and declination form required if declined

Facility Specific Requirements

  • Professional photo for badge (plain background, no selfies or filters)
  • Compliance checklist and fair credit reporting acknowledgment (as applicable)
  • Access and Confidentiality Agreement: Must be completed within 48 hours of signing
  • New Hire Paperwork: Must be completed prior to start

  • Contract Staff Orientation Manual: Must be reviewed prior to start (not required for inpatient RNs)
