Neuro Med-Surg Acute RN Position
Location: Peoria, Illinois
Department: Neuro Med-Surg Acute
Unit Size: 54 beds (2 semi-private)
Contract Length
- 13 weeks
Patient Population & Unit Details
- Common diagnoses: Stroke, spine surgery, seizure, brain tumor, head injury, neuroscience cases, some medical overflow
- Nurse-to-patient ratios:
- Day shift: 1:4-5
- Night shift: 1:5-6
- Nurse aids/patient care tech ratios:
- Day & evening: 1:9-10
- Night: 1:10-12
- Telemetry: House-wide telemetry with Phillips monitors; nurses do not read their own strips
- Respiratory equipment: High flow oxygen for stable COVID patients (rare); RNs troubleshoot only
Required Experience & Skills
- Must have Level 1 trauma experience
- Previous travel nursing experience required (no first-time travelers)
- Prior experience on a dedicated neuro unit required
- RNs must be able to titrate drips, including heparin drip based on PTT (heparin drip experience required)
Certifications Required
- BLS (AHA)
- NIHSS
Shift & Scheduling
- 12-hour shifts
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend (Saturday and Sunday both shifts)
- Holiday requirement: Every other holiday
- No call or standby requirement
- Floating: Float in rotation with staff; general unit travelers float to general unit floor; if floated outside general unit, only assigned tasks within competency and with trained nurse support
Orientation & Policies
- Orientation: 2 days (unit-specific and computer training) with educator and preceptor
- OSF Call Off Policy: Equivalent of 12 hours off every 13 weeks with no penalty or payback required
- Non-billable orientation hours: 12 hours (guaranteed hours do not apply during orientation)
- Drug-Free Campus: Negative drug screen required for all panels
- Dress code: No scrub color requirement; tattoos must be covered; only ear piercings allowed
Additional Notes
- Charge nurse present 24/7, generally does not take patient assignments unless short staffed
- House supervisor available 24/7
- Local placements accepted within 50-mile radius (local rate adjustments apply)
