Registered Nurse (ER) - Travel Contract

Location: Bakersfield, California
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Summary

Seeking an experienced ER nurse for a travel contract in California. The role requires working in both Adult and Pediatric ER settings, with some floating to Pediatric ER. Candidates must have prior travel experience and be flexible with scheduling.


Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in California
  • Minimum 3 years of Emergency Department (ED) nursing experience, including experience within the last year
  • One completed travel assignment
  • Certifications: ACLS, BLS, PALS, NIHSS
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • Experience working with both Pediatric and Adult ER patients
  • Experience in triage
  • Pediatric ER experience

Work Environment & Patient Population

  • Adult ER: 36 treatment areas
  • Pediatric ER: 12 treatment areas plus 8 fast track pods
  • Approximately 325 patient visits per day across both ERs
  • Pediatric ER is a receiving center for pediatric emergencies
  • Common patient diagnoses include respiratory failure, asthma, abdominal pain, fractures, substance abuse, and occasional psychiatric holds
  • Adult ER is a STEMI, CVA, and burn receiving center

Staffing & Support

  • ER staffed by MDs and mid-level providers
  • Charge nurse and house supervisor present
  • ER techs, CNAs, and LVNs support nursing staff
  • Fast track area staffed by RNs and LVNs
  • Monitor techs present for telemetry monitoring
  • Respiratory therapy available for vents, CPAP, BiPAP, high flow, ABGs, breathing treatments, and EKGs
  • Phlebotomy performed by nursing staff

Shifts & Scheduling

  • 12-hour shifts: 7a-7p, 11a-11p, 3p-3a, 7p-7a
  • No block scheduling; flexibility required
  • Weekend requirement: 4 shifts per month (can be 1 per week or 2 every other week)
  • Holiday shifts expected unless on contracted time off
  • No call required; standby possible with 30-minute response time if called in

Additional Information

  • Nurses will float within ER only (no floating outside ER)
  • Dress code: Navy blue scrubs for RNs; no hoodies, sweatshirts, or sweat jackets allowed
  • Basic EKG interpretation required; critical care RNs may have additional testing
  • ER holds are managed by ER nurses; no separate psych/seclusion rooms
  • Security present in ER

This opportunity is ideal for ER nurses with solid pediatric and adult ER experience who have completed prior travel contracts and are comfortable in a busy, diverse emergency department setting.
