Unit Overview
- Department: Cardio Thoracic Unit
- Beds: 70
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:
- Days: 1:4-5
- Nights: 1:5-6
- Patient Types/Diagnoses: MI, CHF, A fib, COPD, pacemaker/AICD placement, lung surgeries (including chest tubes, esophagectomy not fresh from PACU), general medical overflow
Required Certifications & Skills
- RN licensure (active Illinois license or application in process)
- BLS (AHA) required; ACLS recommended
- EKG interpretation and medication titration skills required
- Basic nursing skills
- Ability to titrate drips (mainly Cardizem and heparin)
Staffing & Support
- Charge Nurse: 24/7 coverage, rarely takes patient assignments
- House Supervisor: 24/7 coverage
- Patient Care Technicians (PCTs):
- Days: 1:8-9
- Evenings: 1:9-10
- Nights: 1:10-12
- Respiratory Therapy Equipment: CPAP, BiPAP (used if part of patient’s home regimen), heated high flow oxygen only in special COVID cases; RNs troubleshoot as needed
- Tele/Monitor Techs present; nurses must read and interpret telemetry strips (Phillips monitors)
Scheduling & Work Hours
- Shift Length: 12-hour shifts
- Shift Times: 0700-1930 and 1900-0730
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
- Days: Saturday/Sunday
- Nights: Friday/Saturday or Saturday/Sunday
- Holiday Requirement: Rotating holidays
- Days: Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Day
- Nights: Memorial Day Eve, July 3rd, Labor Day Eve, Thanksgiving Eve, Christmas Eve, New Year’s Eve
- No current call or standby requirement
- Floating: Required to float to other general medical units
Orientation & Dress Code
- Orientation: Typically 1 shift or part of one; may vary if previously worked at this facility
- Scrub Color: Any color except children/cartoon prints (adult unit)
- Drug-Free Campus: Negative drug screen required for all panels
Additional Notes
- Local placements accepted within a 50-mile radius
- Non-billable orientation hours: 12 hours
- OSF Call Off Policy: Equivalent of 12 hours off every 13 weeks without penalty or pay obligation
