Job info

Registered Nurse - NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit)

Location: Portland, Maine
Employment Type: Travel

Job Description

  • Work in a 31-bed Level III/IV NICU with an additional 20-bed Level II NICU and a 10-bed Level II NICU satellite.
  • Provide care across three separate physical locations due to expanded operations: NICU1 & NICU2, SCU1 (10-patient satellite), and Prenatal Center unit (temporary 6 beds).
  • The unit is currently operating above staffed bed capacity, consistently caring for 61+ patients versus 51 budgeted beds.
  • Patient acuity and census are high, requiring a minimum of 29 RNs to maintain safe nurse-to-patient ratios.
  • Staffing challenges include multiple leaves of absence reducing core staff and new RNs on orientation limiting immediate independent assignments.
  • Rotating 36-hour shifts covering day and night, with every other weekend work.
  • Travelers will provide critical support to maintain safe staffing ratios, offset leave impacts, and ensure high-quality neonatal care during a construction period and sustained census surge.
  • Orientation period of 2-3 days before assuming full patient assignments.

Contract Length

  • Approximately 26 weeks.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Maine
  • Minimum 2 years of NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care) experience
  • NICU experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)

Additional Information

  • Prior travel experience is not explicitly required.
  • The role demands flexibility and ability to work across multiple units with high patient acuity and census.
  • Ability to integrate quickly and work independently after a short orientation period is essential.

This position is ideal for experienced NICU RNs seeking a travel assignment in a high-acuity, multi-location neonatal intensive care environment.
