Clinical Laboratory Scientist (Travel)
Location: San Diego, California
Employment Type: Clinical - Allied - Travel
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Description
Key Responsibilities
- Perform analytic testing procedures following written policies and procedures; identify and submit necessary revisions.
- Conduct new procedures within acceptable training intervals and meet department turnaround time goals.
- Document activities and results thoroughly and accurately; proofread work to ensure zero defects and harm.
- Review operational reports for clerical and analytical errors and correct as needed.
- Evaluate data accuracy and investigate questionable findings with appropriate follow-through.
- Perform pre-analytical (patient reception, sample collection, processing) and analytical procedures, considering patient age and population-specific factors.
- Demonstrate emotional intelligence, critical thinking, and logical decision-making, especially under stressful situations.
- Serve as a key resource for employee and student training, development, and competency assessment.
- Operate and validate testing equipment, analyzers, and technology.
- Participate in writing and revising policies and procedures.
- Perform additional duties to meet operational needs.
Equipment Management
- Utilize equipment and analyzers per manufacturer instructions and established procedures.
- Report, document, and resolve equipment or reagent issues promptly.
- Remove defective equipment from use and coordinate repairs; verify inspections are current.
- Validate equipment performance post-repair.
- Participate in evaluation and selection of analyzers and test methodologies.
- Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on equipment.
- Manage inventory and evaluate consumables to prevent shortages; alert ordering personnel as needed.
Quality Assurance
- Coordinate and complete processes to meet quality testing standards and engage in continuous process improvement.
- Represent the laboratory department in committees, taskforces, or workgroups as needed.
- Communicate clearly using tools such as Closed Loop and SBAR.
- Supervise Medical Lab Technicians, Certified Phlebotomy Technicians, and Laboratory Assistants, promoting accountability and teamwork.
- Complete and assess QC performance, proficiency testing, test validation/calibration/linearity, and take corrective actions as needed.
- Monitor quality assurance indicators and work with the team to meet or exceed thresholds.
- Identify errors and follow through with investigation, correction, documentation, and notification to caregivers and lab leadership.
- Demonstrate self-awareness and pursue continuous professional growth.
- Perform shift lead duties as necessary.
- Participate in regulatory and safety compliance activities.
Requirements
- California Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) Generalist license - REQUIRED
- ASCP certification preferred
- Minimum 3 years recent CLS experience
