Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position

Location: Bloomington, Indiana

Job Description

  • Unit Type: Acuity adaptable unit with patients ranging from Medical-Surgical (MS) level to Progressive Care Unit (PCU)/Stepdown/ICU level of care.
  • Patient Ratios: Typically 1:4-6 depending on acuity and patient type; can fluctuate with unit census (4-bed unit that can expand to 8-10 beds).
  • Float Position: RN floats to inpatient PCU unit as needed; PCU experience required.
  • Boarding Unit: Patients come from the Emergency Department (ED) and are boarded until discharge or transfer to inpatient units. Patients are generally stable; unstable patients are moved out.
  • Team Nursing: RN will work with LPNs and CNAs; must be comfortable with delegation and team nursing.
  • Shift Options:
    • 3 shifts of 12 hours (36 hours/week)
    • 4 shifts of 12 hours (48 hours/week)
    • 8 or 10 hour shifts totaling 40 hours/week
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
  • Experience Required: Minimum 2 years
  • First Time Travelers: Not accepted
  • Cerner experience required
  • On-call: Not required
  • Locals: Not accepted
  • Holiday Requirement: Must work 2 out of 3 major holidays

Required Certifications

  • BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA only, RQI acceptable
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - AHA only, RQI acceptable
  • NIH Stroke Certification
  • Additional certifications may be required depending on unit

Required Competencies and Exams

  • Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam
  • Unit Competency Exam
  • Color Blind Testing (Ishihara exam or equivalent, minimum 100% score)

Required Documents and Verifications

  • Valid Driver’s License or Passport (clear copy)
  • Background Check (within 90 days) including:
    • 7 years residence/work history
    • SSN Trace
    • County, Statewide, National Sex Offender, FACIS Level III
    • Education Verification (highest applicable education)
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM Check (within 30 days)
  • HHS/OIG Check (within 30 days)
  • Transcript or Diploma (official, clear copy)
  • State License Verification (within 30 days, primary source)
  • References: Minimum 2 from recent employment with appropriate supervisory titles
  • Employment Application: Current with full work history and explanations for gaps over 30 days
  • Skills Checklist: Within 12 months and annually updated
  • Application must cover 7 years with all gaps accounted for

Health and Safety Requirements

  • Physical Exam: Completed within 12 months of start date
  • Fit Mask Test: Within 12 months, must be tested with approved respirators (3M N95 models or Honeywell N95)
  • Immunizations and Titers:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (preferred but not required)
    • Negative TB test or Chest X-Ray within 1 year
    • Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no declinations accepted
    • Hepatitis B: Series, titer, or signed declination required
    • Varicella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no declinations accepted
  • Drug Testing: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months (no instant tests)
  • Flu Vaccination: Required for flu season (9/30 - 3/31); no declinations accepted except approved medical or religious exemptions through Aya Healthcare

Facility Specific Requirements

  • Completion of facility-specific compliance, confidentiality, policy, and orientation documents prior to start
  • HIPAA Acknowledgement required
  • Various facility-specific packets and checklists must be completed as a priority

Additional Notes

  • Must be comfortable working in a dynamic, acuity-adaptable environment with fluctuating patient ratios and team nursing models.
  • Must be able to float between boarding unit and PCU inpatient unit.
  • Must be willing to work every other weekend and 2 out of 3 major holidays.
  • Cerner experience is mandatory.
  • First-time travelers are not accepted for this position.
