Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (Emergency Department)

Location: Charleston, West Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Details

  • Shift: 3x12hr nights (7pm-7am), weekdays, every other weekend required
  • Start Date: Orientation held every other week on Thursday
  • Patient Ratio: 4:1
  • Patient Population: Infants to Geriatrics
  • Unit Description: Level 1 Trauma, 24 beds
    • Neurological, orthopedic, psychiatric, renal emergencies
    • High psych population (no separate psych area)
    • Multiple high acuity patients boarding
  • Guaranteed Hours: 36 hours/week
  • Floating: May float within scope to meet facility needs
  • Call Requirements: None

Candidate Requirements

  • Experience:
    • Minimum 2 years RN experience
    • At least 1 year in Emergency Department or related specialty
  • Licensure:
    • WV or Compact RN license required
    • Pending license accepted but must have active license before start
  • Certifications Required:
    • BLS (AHA only)
    • ACLS (AHA only)
    • PALS (AHA only)
    • TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course)
    • CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) - must be completed >1 week before start; online courses not accepted
  • Skills:
    • IV Start
    • Telemetry
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend required
  • First-Time Travelers: Accepted if experience requirements met
  • Distance Requirement: Permanent address must be >100 miles from facility; 75-100 miles considered case-by-case
  • Return to Facility Restriction: Permanent employees cannot return as travelers for 2 years after last permanent date

Orientation & Training

  • Orientation is 2 days (Thursday and Friday)
  • Includes Cerner Infusion Management
  • Inservice training modules (approx. 4 hours) must be completed 1 week before start
  • Pass/Fail testing required for EKG, Medication Calculation, and Blood Administration
  • Review of facility policies including Blood Administration, Dress Code, Math Calculation Packet, and EKG Review required prior to start (no tests at orientation)

Health & Compliance Requirements

  • Physical Exam: Within 1 year of start, must state candidate is in good health and able to perform duties
  • Fit Mask Testing: Annual fit testing required (3M N95 1860 Small/Regular or Aura 9205)
    • Onsite fit testing may be accommodated if no clinic within 100 miles
    • PAPR accommodations available if unable to pass fit test
  • Vaccinations:
    • COVID-19 vaccination not mandatory; proof or signed declination accepted
    • Flu vaccine required during flu season (Oct 1 - Mar 31) unless approved medical/religious exemption
    • Tdap vaccination required (no declinations accepted; exemptions require approval)
    • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) and Varicella: 2 vaccines or positive titers required; boosters may be pending with conditions
    • Hepatitis B: Documentation of vaccination or titer required; 3-dose series must be completed if no prior immunity
  • TB Testing: Negative TB test within 3 months of start (2-step skin test or preferred QGold/TSpot)
  • Drug Screen: Within 30 days of start, includes multiple substances; no placeholders or pending results accepted

Background & Documentation

  • 7-year criminal background check within 30 days of start
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG, and National Sex Offender Registry checks required and must be current
  • Valid Driver’s License required
  • Social Security Card required (legible)
  • Residency Declaration Form if working on compact license (driver’s license must match compact state)
  • Primary source license verification (NURSYS) within 30 days of start
  • References: Minimum 1 manager/supervisor/charge nurse reference from within 1 year
  • Annual skills checklist for specialty required

Additional Notes

  • Candidates must clearly state shift preference (any, days, or nights) in submission
  • Candidates refusing flu vaccine without medical proof will not be considered
  • Candidates must complete all required documentation and training prior to start
  • Permanent employees returning as travelers must wait 2 years after last permanent assignment
