Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position
Location: Durham, North Carolina
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
- Employment Type: Travel/Contract
- Specialty: Registered Nurse
- Experience Required: Minimum 2 years in specialty (PCICU experience strongly preferred; NICU, Pediatric Stepdown, and Pediatric RNs also considered)
- Licensure: North Carolina or Compact nursing license required and must be in hand
- Certifications Required:
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
- Prior travel experience: Not explicitly required (First-timers OK)
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
- Floating: Yes
- Orientation: Bi-weekly
- Local candidates within 75 miles considered
Key Job Requirements
- Flu vaccination is mandatory; no exemptions or declinations accepted
- Must be able to work weekends every other weekend
- Must be willing to float to other units as needed
Required Documentation & Compliance
- Background checks including SSN trace, county checks for past 7 years, sex offender, education verification, EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG, OFAC sanctions list search
- Physical exam within 12 months of start
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 12 months (with specific documentation if history of positive PPD)
- Drug testing: Negative 10-panel within 30 days of start (no instant tests)
- Immunizations/vaccinations required:
- Flu seasonal vaccination (mandatory for new candidates starting October-March)
- Measles (2 vaccines or positive titer)
- Mumps (2 vaccines or positive titer)
- Rubella (1 vaccine or positive titer)
- Varicella (2 vaccines or positive titer)
- Hepatitis B (titer, vaccine series, or declination)
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (every 10 years)
- Polio vaccine or attestation
- Two professional references required from employment within the last 12 months (at least one supervisor)
- Employment application and skills checklist must be completed and updated annually
- Competency exams and unit-specific training required during orientation
- Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) training provided during orientation (valid for 2 years)
Licensure & Certification Verification
- Must have verifications for state license and certifications such as BLS, PALS, ACLS (if applicable)
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) and Chemotherapy certification may be required depending on unit
- National certification verifications required where applicable (e.g., ARRT for Radiology techs, NBRC for Respiratory therapists)
Additional Notes
- Candidates must set up a Duke Guest Account prior to clearance to access orientation and work systems
- Online orientation modules and competency checklists must be completed prior to or shortly after start
- Candidates with less than a 30-day gap between previous Duke assignments may have some documentation requirements waived or accepted on file
- Pass/fail testing for EKG/medication knowledge is required for all except RRTs, typically administered on the first day of orientation
This position is suitable for RNs with at least 2 years of experience, preferably with PCICU or pediatric nursing background, who are flexible with weekend shifts and floating duties, and who can comply with strict immunization and documentation requirements.
