Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse - Neuro Oncology Care Manager
Location: Orange, California
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Description
- Role: Patient Care Manager supporting Neuro Oncology patients in a multidisciplinary team.
- Responsibilities include:
- Developing customized roadmaps for patients.
- Assessment of patients, implementation of physician orders, treatment plans, and medical procedures.
- Record keeping and monitoring/evaluating patient care processes and outcomes.
- Coordinating activities with other services and disciplines.
- Coordinating follow-up appointments, ordering labs/scans, referrals, authorizations, DME ordering/coordination, care coordination, transition planning, and needs assessment.
- Patient Diagnoses: Neuro Oncology patients (no chemotherapy administration but knowledge of chemotherapy and its interactions required).
- Patient Age Group: Neonates, Infants, Pediatrics, Adolescents.
- Average Daily Census: 20-22 patients.
- Float Required: Yes, covering for other colleagues.
- No call requirement.
Required Experience & Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years of Case Manager experience.
- Experience with Oncology and Pediatrics (PEDS).
- Oncology background required.
- Prior travel experience required (No first-time travelers).
- Certifications:
- Required: PALS or PEARS.
- Preferred: CPHON certification.
- CPHON certification is a plus.
Skills & Competencies
- Knowledge of chemotherapy and its interactions.
- Experience with roadmaps for patient care.
- Care coordination and transition planning skills.
- Ability to coordinate labs, appointments, referrals, authorizations, and durable medical equipment (DME).
Certifications & Compliance Requirements
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - AHA only.
- BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA only.
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) - Required for RNs.
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Procedure) - Advanced Provider required.
- Chemotherapy certification (APHON acceptable in lieu of ONS).
- Management of Assaultive Behavior (MAB) or CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) certification may be required depending on unit.
- Medication/Pharmacology competency exam for pediatrics.
- Competency exams specific to pediatric care.
- State License primary source verification prior to start and updated every 3 months.
Health & Safety Requirements
- Negative TB test (IGRA or 2-step PPD) within 60 days of start or acceptable alternative for positive TB history.
- Annual TB questionnaire.
- Tdap vaccine required (TD or Dtap not acceptable).
- Flu vaccine or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season.
- Drug testing: Negative 9-panel drug screen within 60 days of start (instant drug screens not accepted).
- Mask fit testing required prior to start for certain units.
- Physical exam within 1 year of start (Aya standard).
- Eye exam (in-person visual acuity exam) required prior to start.
- Color blind exam (Ishihara test) required if applicable.
- COVID vaccines preferred but not required.
Orientation & Onboarding
- Completion of orientation modules prior to starting on the floor (6-8 hours, deadlines apply).
- Facility-specific orientation including safety manual, dress code, standards of conduct, and other acknowledgments required.
- Badge photo submission required (professional photo with clear face and solid background).
- Prestart modules must be completed by specified deadlines.
- Pyxis Access Request Form completion required prior to start.
- Various facility-specific documents and acknowledgments must be signed prior to or at orientation.
Additional Notes
- Must be able to float and cover other colleagues as needed.
- No chemotherapy administration but must have knowledge of chemotherapy and its interactions.
- Patient care involves neonates through adolescents.
- Prior travel experience is mandatory; first-time travelers will not be considered.
This position is ideal for experienced pediatric oncology case managers with prior travel experience looking to work in a specialized neuro oncology care management role.
