Registered Nurse - Medical-Surgical/Telemetry (Travel/Contract)
Location: Columbus, Ohio
Contract Length: 16 weeks
Job Overview
- Work in a secure corrections health unit with a focus on Oncology Medical-Surgical and Telemetry units.
- Rotating 12-hour day/night shifts; schedule may include days, nights, or a combination based on staffing needs.
- Float between Oncology Medical-Surgical (MS) and Progressive Care Unit (PCU) as needed.
- Patient population includes active oncology cases, oncology workup admissions, history of cancer, and non-oncology diagnoses.
- Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:3 in PCU, 1:4-5 in MS.
- Work environment is a locked corrections unit with controlled access and a Corrections Officer to inmate ratio of 1:2.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Ohio.
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
- Minimum of 1 year of Medical-Surgical and Telemetry nursing experience within the last year.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association.
- Experience with interpretation and management of dysrhythmias and unit-based telemetry monitoring.
- Proficient in IV insulin protocols.
- Skilled in central line care and management, including PICC line management.
- Experience with external CPAP/BIPAP and high flow nasal cannula respiratory support.
- Competent in tracheostomy management.
- Experience with EPIC electronic health record system.
Experience
- Specialty: Registered Nurse in Medical-Surgical/Telemetry.
- Required years of experience: Not explicitly stated; oncology experience preferred but not mandatory.

Skills and Competencies
- Medical-Surgical and Telemetry nursing skills.
- Cardiac monitoring and dysrhythmia interpretation.
- IV therapy including blood product administration, central and peripheral line care, PICC line management, and starting IVs.
- Management of endocrine/metabolic protocols (e.g., IV insulin).
- Gastrointestinal care including feeding tube management.
- Renal care including pre/post hemodialysis and renal failure management.
- Respiratory care including CPAP/BIPAP, high flow nasal cannula, oxygen therapy, ABG interpretation, tracheostomy care, and non-invasive airway management.
- Familiarity with medication protocols including heparin and cardiac drips (no titration), and patient-controlled analgesia (PCA).
Systems Utilized
- EPIC for documentation.
- Pyxis for medication management.
Additional Requirements
- Must complete background checks including criminal history, EPLS/GSA/SAM, and HHS/OIG monitoring.
- Fingerprinting (BCI & FBI) required with specific Ohio codes and timelines.
- Annual review and acknowledgment of dress code, hand hygiene, ethics, and compliance policies.
- Completion of fraud, waste, and abuse training prior to start and annually thereafter.
- Two professional references required, including at least one from a manager or formal leadership.
Work Environment
- Secure corrections health unit with controlled access.
- Collaboration with interdisciplinary teams including pharmacy, physical therapy, radiology, respiratory services, social services, and rapid response teams.
Shift Details
- 12-hour rotating day/night shifts.
- Weekend shifts vary based on unit needs.
- Shift assignments reviewed every 4 weeks but subject to change based on staffing priorities.
This position is ideal for RNs comfortable working in a corrections environment with a strong background or interest in medical-surgical and telemetry nursing, and who have experience with EPIC documentation systems. Oncology experience is a plus but not mandatory.
