Respiratory Therapist (RRT) – Travel/Contract Position
Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Specialty: Respiratory / Neuro Diagnostics
Shift: Nights, 3x12-hour shifts (7:00 PM – 7:00 AM), 4x12 shifts available by request
Contract Length: Up to 26 weeks
Job Description
- Provide respiratory therapy services for adults in a high-volume Emergency Room at a Level 1 Trauma Center.
- Must have critical care experience including Neurotrauma, cardiovascular services, and medical/surgical ICU patients.
- Patient population includes adolescents, adults, and geriatrics with a 1:25 patient ratio.
- Required to float within skillset as needed.
- Work includes airway management (extubation, oral/nasal airway placement, suctioning, sputum collection, tracheostomy care).
- Competent in ABG interpretation and ventilator management (BiPAP, CPAP, HFNC, flow-by, troubleshooting high-pressure alarms, weaning from mechanical ventilation).
- Skilled in aerosol and medication delivery systems and administration of respiratory medications such as Albuterol, Atrovent, Combivent, Flovent, Pulmicort, Mucomyst, racemic epinephrine, inhaled Flolan, inhaled steroids, bicarbonate, and lidocaine.
- Proficient in oxygen therapy and nebulizer setups (handheld, T-piece, trach collar, ultrasonic).
- Charting experience with EPIC required.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Respiratory Therapist license in Virginia.
- Minimum of 1 year of recent Respiratory Therapist experience.
- Critical care experience.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
- Experience with EPIC electronic medical records system.
Scheduling and Work Requirements
- Typical schedule: 3 twelve-hour night shifts per week (7 PM – 7 AM).
- Option for 4 twelve-hour shifts available by request.
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts within a 6-week block.
- Must work at least one holiday per 13-week contract.
- Facility allows calling off 1 shift per 2 weeks.
- First-time travelers accepted; however, 1 year of travel experience is preferred.
- Local candidates are not accepted due to radius restrictions.
Equipment and Protocols
- Experience with ventilators and respiratory equipment including Servo I, Servo U, V-60 BiPAP, Optiflow heated high flow, iNO with the iNOvent, and LTV1200.
- Follow robust Assess and Treat protocols including ventilator management and liberation policies.
Required Documentation and Compliance
- Valid Driver’s License/State ID with an address more than 100 miles from the facility required within 48 hours of signing.
- Background check covering 7 years of history required within 1 year of start date.
- E-Verify or attestation required.
- Education verification of highest earned degree required; transcript or diploma must be provided.
- Physical exam within 1 year of start confirming freedom from communicable diseases.
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start.
- Fit test within 1 year of start, updated annually.
- Negative TB test (PPD, QGold, or TSpot) within 1 year, updated annually; if previously positive, clear chest X-ray within 1 year and annual TB questionnaire required.
- Immunizations or positive titers required for: Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella.
- Flu vaccination documentation or signed declination form required during flu season.
- Photo for badge required (professional picture with plain background).
- Completion of new hire paperwork, compliance checklists, and orientation manuals prior to start.
Additional Notes
- Must submit all requests for time off with initial submission.
- Facility enforces radius rule for candidate eligibility.
- Candidates must complete required competency exams and medication/pharmacology tests as applicable.
- Candidates must acknowledge HIPAA and confidentiality agreements.
