Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse - Medical Surgical

Location: Indianapolis, Indiana
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Strong urology skillset required, including CBI and hand irrigations.
  • Minimum 2 years of nursing experience.
  • IV start skills required.
  • Candidates must have majority high competency ratings (3s & 4s) in urology to pass.
  • Patient diagnoses include urology, plastic surgery, orthopedic oncology, surgical oncology hospitalist.
  • Floating may be required to different levels of care such as Med-Surg, PCU, ICU with resources provided.
  • Cerner experience is required.
  • First-time travelers accepted; local candidates not accepted.
  • Call-in shift policies apply depending on FTE status.

Required Certifications

  • BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA or RQI accepted.
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - AHA or RQI accepted.
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) - AHA or RQI accepted.
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) - AHA NRP only.
  • Chemotherapy certification as applicable.
  • TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) as applicable.
  • Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM) as applicable.
  • State RN license verification required (Indiana RN license).
  • HIPAA Acknowledgement.
  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam.
  • Unit competency exam.
  • Color Blind Testing (Ishihara exam or equivalent) with 100% minimum score.

Required Documents & Health Screenings

  • Valid Driver’s License or Passport (clear copy).
  • Background checks including 7-year history, education verification, EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG.
  • Official transcript or diploma showing degree and graduation date.
  • Physical exam within 12 months of start date.
  • Fit mask test within 12 months (specific approved respirators required).
  • Tuberculosis screening (PPD, QuantiFERON-TB Gold, or T-SPOT) within 1 year.
  • Immunizations or titers for:
    • Rubeola (Measles)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Varicella
    • Hepatitis B (series, titer, or signed declination)
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (strongly recommended)
  • Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months.
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season.
  • References: Minimum 2 from recent employment with supervisory titles.
  • Current employment application with full work history and explanations for gaps.
  • Skills checklist within 12 months, updated annually.
  • TB questionnaire updated annually.

Additional Information

  • IU Health will not allow Indiana RN license holders to work at their facilities effective 11/30/2024, except for Perioperative/OR, Allied, and Ambulatory RN travelers.
  • On-site fit testing is limited and must be documented if done.
  • Mandatory completion of facility-specific orientation modules prior to start.
  • Floating to different units may be required.
  • Candidates must comply with all facility-specific forms and policies prior to start.

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Indiana
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • Minimum 2 years of Med Surg nursing experience, with Med Surg experience within the last year
  • Strong urology skillset and urology experience
  • IV start skills
  • Experience with Cerner
