Registered Nurse - NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit)

Location: New Haven, Connecticut
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Work in Neonatal ICU with an average nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:2-4
  • Shift: Day shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 AM - 7:00 PM)
  • Weekend requirement: Every other weekend
  • Floating within scope of practice to meet facility needs is required
  • First-time travelers accepted
  • Guaranteed hours
  • Experience required with IVs, central lines, OG/NG feeds, and phlebotomy skills
  • Pending license accepted but must be active prior to start date
  • Return to office (RTO) restrictions: Absences greater than 7 days require approval

Required Certifications

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) - AHA or ARC only
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) - AHA required for NICU
  • Additional certifications may be required depending on unit specifics (verify with unit description)

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Connecticut
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), with experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Experience with central lines and phlebotomy skills
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification

Health and Safety Requirements

  • Physical exam within 12 months of start
  • Fit mask test within 12 months of start, updated annually (clean shaven required)
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray documentation (various accepted tests, no annual update required unless positive history)
  • Annual TB questionnaire
  • 10-panel drug screen within 12 months of start
  • Flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season (9/1 - 3/31)
  • COVID vaccination series preferred but not required
  • Immunization or positive titer documentation for:
    • Rubeola (Measles)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Varicella
    • Hepatitis B (or declination within 1 year)
  • Tdap vaccination highly preferred for pediatric specialties but not required

Training and Competency Modules (Must be completed and attested)

  • Language Services Training
  • CAUTI Education Training (except NICU, PICU, Psychiatry/Behavioral Health)
  • Suicide Risk and Environmental Assessment Training
  • Mobile Heartbeat Alarm Module (not required for NICU)
  • Stroke Education (not required for NICU or pediatric specialties)
  • CLABSI Prevention for Adult and Pediatric Training
  • Preventing Pressure Injury Training
  • Patient Transportation with Oxygen Education
  • Pyxis ES MedStation Training
  • Baxter Pump Interoperability Training
  • Patient Bedside Rounding (not required for OR, Behavioral Health, Ambulatory, ER/ED)
  • Ventricular Assist Device Awareness (not required for NICU or pediatric specialties)
  • AME Blood Administration Module (not required for Behavioral Health or Case Managers)
  • New Employee Orientation Module (must be completed by start date)
  • 21st Century Cures Act Module (required for RN except Home Health)
  • Chaperone Policy Training (required if gap of 6+ months between assignments or module updated)
  • Fire Safety Module (effective 5/4/2026)
  • EPIC Testing or Training (optional but highly encouraged for those with prior EPIC experience)

Background and Verification Requirements

  • 7-year criminal background check within 12 months of start, including:
    • SSN trace
    • Counties lived/worked
    • Statewide and national checks (sex offender, criminal, federal, EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG)
  • Education verification including foreign equivalency evaluation if applicable
  • Transcript or diploma verification if education verification cannot be completed
  • Employment verification for last 7 years (no gaps >90 days)
  • Skills checklist within 12 months of start
  • Attestation of prior radiation exposure if applicable to assignment

  • Candidate must provide photo ID matching legal name on first day
  • Parking cost approximately $125/month
  • Must comply with facility-specific policies and complete all required attestations via electronic signature
