Job Opportunity: CVICU Registered Nurse

Location: Orange, California
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Details

  • Shift: Nights, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM - 7:00 AM)
  • Required Experience: Minimum 2 years of strong PICU or NICU experience
  • Floating: Required; must float to PICU or NICU first, may also float to Pediatric Medical/Surgical Oncology floor
  • Weekend Requirement: 4 weekend shifts per month, including some holidays (shared with regular staff)
  • On-call: Not required
  • Scheduling: Self-scheduling
  • Documentation System: Cerner

Unit & Patient Population

  • Highly variable patient population, mostly surgical patients with a large majority being infants
  • Patient acuity varies
  • Procedures and equipment include:
    • ECMO (technicians operate pumps)
    • Nitric Oxide therapy
    • Pacemakers
    • Chest tubes
    • Invasive monitors
    • Bedside procedures such as chest tube placement and cardioversions
  • No floating to Emergency Department or Mental Health units

Required Certifications

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - AHA only
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA only
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) - AHA only

Licensure

  • Must hold a valid Registered Nurse license for California (paperless system; no physical copy required)

Health & Compliance Requirements

  • Negative 9-panel drug test within 60 days of start (instant drug screens not accepted)
  • Tdap vaccine required (TD or DTaP not acceptable)
  • IGRA or 2-step PPD TB test within 60 days of start; for past positives, proof of positive, clear chest X-ray within 1 year, and facility-specific TB screening form required
  • Annual TB questionnaire must be completed by all travelers
  • Fit mask testing required prior to start (cannot be completed onsite); acceptable masks include 9205+, 3M 8210, 8110s, and 1804
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season (September 9 - March 31)
  • Eye exam (in-person visual acuity exam) required prior to start (not required for non-clinical travelers)
  • Ishihara color blind exam required if applicable (in-person only)
  • COVID vaccines preferred but not required

Background & Documentation

  • Criminal background check within 60 days of start, including:
    • 7-year search with SSN trace
    • National database criminal search
    • National sex offender check
    • Education verification of highest degree (transcript or diploma acceptable as placeholder)
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 60 days of start
  • Verification of 2 previous employers covering at least 7 years of relevant experience (cannot be pending)
  • 2 supervisor references required (charge RN or floor supervisor acceptable; may be pending at start)
  • Employment application and unit-specific skills checklist must be completed and signed
  • Orientation modules must be completed prior to starting on the floor (approximately 6-8 hours, deadlines apply)
  • Facility-specific documents including job description, non-disclosure agreement, standards of conduct, dress code acknowledgment, and safety reporting must be reviewed and signed

Additional Requirements & Notes

  • Photo ID (driver’s license or passport) with front and back copies must be presented upon arrival
  • Orientation includes virtual and in-person components; candidates should be local or in the area by start date
  • Badge pickup occurs on the unit during the first shift; security screening including temperature checks may be required
  • Medication and pediatric competency exams required; must score 80% or higher on NICU pharmacology section if applicable
  • No artificial fingernails allowed; natural nails must be maintained at ¼ inch or less and polish must be chip-free
  • Floating to Emergency Department or Mental Health units is not permitted
  • No on-call responsibilities

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in California
  • Minimum 2 years of CVICU experience, with CVICU experience within the last year
  • Experience in PICU (Pediatric Intensive Care Unit) and NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit)
  • Current certifications in ACLS, BLS, PALS, and NRP
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
