Registered Nurse (RN) - Labor & Delivery (Travel)

Location: Moreno Valley, California
Employment Type: Clinical Nursing Travel
Shift: Day Shift (7:00 AM – 7:30 PM)
Hours: 12 hours per day, 36 hours per week
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Assess patients on admission considering physical, psychosocial, cultural, and spiritual needs.
  • Reassess patient health needs at least every shift or as condition changes using nursing processes.
  • Develop and update individualized plans of care based on comprehensive data and reassessments.
  • Administer oral, topical, and parenteral medications following the "7 rights" of medication administration.
  • Monitor and document effectiveness and adverse effects of medications and treatments.
  • Perform treatments and procedures adhering to nursing best practices, hospital policies, sterile technique, standard precautions, and patient privacy.
  • Document care, pain management, discharge planning, education, and progress accurately and legibly with date, time, signature, and title.
  • Educate patients and families based on assessed needs using approved educational materials.
  • Interpret diagnostic data and reports; intervene appropriately.
  • Communicate promptly any changes in patient condition to physicians and healthcare team members using SBAR communication during handoffs.
  • Respect patient rights including confidentiality, safety, and participation in care planning.
  • Evaluate and document patient care and effectiveness of patient teaching.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary care planning.
  • Manage patients in restraints according to policy and understand application criteria.
  • Follow National Patient Safety Goals and hospital policies including use of two patient identifiers.
  • Understand and participate in hospital disaster plans and rapid response activation.
  • Complete orientation to Life Safety Standards including Code Blue, Code Pink, Code Red, Haz Mat spills, and oxygen shut-off procedures.
  • Adhere to hospital infection control policies.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of blood transfusion policies and documentation.
  • Understand and appropriately use the Chain of Command.
  • Be familiar with Labor and Delivery policies and routines.
  • Manage patients in labor and newborns immediately post-delivery appropriately.
  • Use APGAR scoring to assess neonates within five minutes of birth.
  • Recognize signs and symptoms of fetal distress and perform standard nursing interventions.
  • Document appropriately on Labor & Delivery flow sheets and related forms.
  • Assist physicians with placement of umbilical vein catheters (UIPC) and fetal scalp electrodes.
  • Continuously review fetal monitor strips for signs of fetal distress.
  • Apply external fetal monitors and correctly position sono and tocotransducers to monitor fetal heart tones and uterine activity.
  • Identify changes in patient condition (e.g., fetal distress, magnesium toxicity) and notify physicians as needed.
  • Accurately assess deep tendon reflexes (DTRs) and magnesium sulfate levels during management of patients receiving magnesium sulfate for preterm labor and pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH).

Required Qualifications

  • Current RN license valid in California.
  • Minimum 3 years recent Labor & Delivery experience in an acute care facility.
  • Certification in ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support), BLS (Basic Life Support), and CA RN license.
  • Fetal heart monitoring certification.
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) certification.
