Registered Nurse (RN) – ICU/PCU Float

Location: Lufkin, Texas
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Unit & Patient Care Details

• Work in a rural hospital setting with an outdated EMR system.
• Float between 2 units: ICU (24 beds) and PCU (26 beds).
• Nurse-to-patient ratios:

  • ICU: typically 2:1, sometimes 3:1 depending on patient acuity
  • PCU: 4:1
• Common patient types: cardiac post-CABG or PCI, sepsis, DKA, respiratory failure.
• Critical care experience required.
• RNs are required to titrate drips such as Levophed, amiodarone, heparin, precedex, propofol, cardene, nitro, neosynephrine, dopamine, etc.

Staffing & Support

• No nurse aides in ICU; 1-2 aides per shift in PCU.
• Intensivist available in-house during the day; hospitalists available 24/7.
• Respiratory therapists available 24/7 with equipment including vents, BiPAP, CPAP, and Airvo.
• Bedside monitors and monitor techs on site; RNs read cardiac strips.
• Charge nurse and house supervisor roles present on each shift.

Scheduling & Work Hours

• Night shift: 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM, 12-hour shifts.
• Expect to work approximately 36 hours per week (4 shifts).
• Weekend and holiday coverage usually required every other weekend or as needed.
• No call or standby requirement.

Orientation & Dress Code

• New employee orientation during the first week.
• Orientation shifts on both ICU and PCU units, including night shifts.
• Dress code: navy blue scrubs.

Required Certifications & Qualifications

• Current ACLS and BLS certifications required.
• Critical care nursing experience required.

Additional Notes

• Floating between ICU and PCU is mandatory, with occasional floating to other departments as needed.
