Labor & Delivery (L&D) Nurse Opportunity

Location: Pendleton, Oregon
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Unit Information

  • Unit: Labor & Delivery / Postpartum / Mother-Baby (L&D/PP/MB)
  • L&D Beds: 5
  • OR Suites: 1 (within the unit, staffed by main OR; no scrubbing/circulating required)
  • Triage Beds: 1
  • Postpartum Beds: 3 (in addition to 5 LDRPs)
  • Annual Births: Approximately 340 (30-35 per month)
  • Nurse-to-Patient Ratios: Follow AWHONN guidelines
  • Charge Nurse: Present on unit
  • House Supervisor: In-house

Certifications & Licenses

  • Required: BLS, NRP
  • Oregon nursing license required (90-day emergency license available)

Patient Population & Care

  • Not a high-risk department
  • Common patient care areas: Labor & Delivery, Postpartum, Routine Nursery, Intermediate Nursery
  • Nurses must be independent in all areas of care
  • Minimum 2 nurses present at all times, sometimes 3
  • Nurses serve as backups for each other and share equal responsibility
  • RNs are required to titrate drips (e.g., Pitocin induction/augmentation, insulin drips, Magnesium Sulfate)

Support Staff & Resources

  • CNA II unit secretary available
  • OB/Neonatologist: Not in-house 24/7 but on-call; OBs usually in-house with laboring patients
  • Respiratory Therapy Equipment: Ventilator (stabilize/transfer only), Bubble CPAP
  • Monitoring: Central fetal strip monitoring; maternal cardiac telemetry read by ICU staff
  • EFM System: FE Centricity Perinatal

Scheduling & Work Environment

  • Shifts: 12-hour shifts (7am-7pm or 7pm-7am)
  • Scheduling: Block scheduling with allowed shift trades
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend (EOW)
  • Holiday Requirement: 1 major and 1 minor holiday if applicable
  • Call/Standby: To be discussed
  • Floating: Expected to float and assist other units as needed
  • Orientation: Unit-specific orientation typically lasts 3 shifts
  • Dress Code: Scrubs provided

Additional Notes

  • Workload can vary from slow to very busy; flexibility and ability to multitask are essential
  • Nurses may start a shift with no labors and end with multiple patients including laboring, postpartum, and intermediate nursery babies

This position is ideal for experienced L&D nurses who are confident working independently across multiple care areas and thrive in a dynamic, team-oriented environment.
