Labor & Delivery Nurse Opportunity

Location: Pendleton, Oregon
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Unit Information

  • Unit: Labor & Delivery (L&D), Postpartum (PP), Mother-Baby (MB)
  • L&D Beds: 5
  • OR Suites: 1 within the unit (staffed by main OR, no scrubbing/circulating required)
  • Triage Beds: 1
  • Postpartum Beds: 3 (in addition to 5 LDRPs)
  • Annual Births: Approximately 340 (30-35 per month)
  • Patient Acuity: Not a high-risk department
  • Nurse-to-Patient Ratios: Follow AWHONN guidelines

Required Certifications & Licenses

  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
  • Oregon Nursing License (90-Day Emergency License available)

Experience & Skills Required

  • Experience in L&D, Postpartum, routine nursery, and Intermediate Nursery care
  • Ability to work independently across all areas of care
  • Strong clinical skills essential
  • Nurses function as equal backups to each other; minimum 2 nurses present at all times, sometimes 3
  • Ability to titrate drips (Pitocin induction/augmentation, insulin drips, Magnesium Sulfate)

Staffing & Support

  • Charge Nurse present on unit
  • House Supervisor available in-house
  • CNA II unit secretary available
  • OB/Neonatologist on call 24/7; OBs usually in-house with laboring patients
  • Respiratory Therapy equipment available for stabilization and transfer (ventilator, Bubble CPAP)
  • Central monitoring for fetal heart strips; maternal cardiac telemetry read by ICU staff
  • EFM System: FE Centricity Perinatal

Scheduling & Work Environment

  • 12-hour shifts: 7am-7pm or 7pm-7am
  • Block scheduling with ability to trade shifts
  • Weekend requirement: Every other weekend (EOW)
  • Holiday requirement: 1 major and 1 minor holiday if applicable
  • Call/standby requirements: To be discussed
  • Floating: Expected to float and assist other units as needed
  • Scrubs provided
  • Unit-specific orientation: Typically 3 shifts

Additional Notes

  • Workload can vary from very busy to slow; flexibility and ability to multitask are essential
  • Nurses may start a shift with no labors and end with multiple labors, postpartum patients, and intermediate nursery transfers

This position is ideal for experienced L&D nurses who are confident working independently in a supportive team environment and are comfortable managing a variety of maternal and newborn care needs.
