Neuro Med-Surg Acute RN Position

Location: Peoria, Illinois
Unit: Neuro Med-Surg Acute
Beds: 54 (2 semi-private)
Shift: 12-hour shifts (3-12s), including nights (1900-0700)
Schedule:

• Every other weekend required (Saturday and Sunday both shifts)
• Every other holiday required
• Floating required in rotation with staff; travelers float to general unit, may float outside unit only if competent and paired with trained nurse

Patient Population & Care

• Common diagnoses: Stroke, spine surgery, seizure, brain tumor, head injury, neuroscience cases, some medical overflow
• Nurse-to-patient ratios:

  • Day shift: 1:4-5
  • Night shift: 1:5-6
• Nurse aides/patient care techs ratios:

  • Days & evenings: 1:9-10
  • Nights: 1:10-12

Clinical Requirements & Skills

• Required certifications: BLS (AHA), NIHSS
• Experience:

  • Level 1 trauma experience required
  • Previous travel nursing experience required (no first-time travelers)
  • Prior experience on a dedicated neuro unit required
• RNs must titrate drips, including heparin drip based on PTT (heparin drip experience required)
• Respiratory equipment: High flow oxygen for stable COVID patients (rare); RNs troubleshoot only
• Telemetry: House-wide telemetry with Phillips monitors; nurses do not read strips

Unit Leadership & Support

• Charge nurse present 24/7; generally does not take patient assignments unless short-staffed
• House supervisor available 24/7

Orientation & Policies

• Orientation: 2 days unit-specific orientation with educator and preceptor
• Drug-free campus: Negative drug screen required for all panels
• Dress code: No scrub color requirement; tattoos must be covered; only ear piercings allowed
• Call/standby: None required
• Local placements accepted within 50-mile radius
