Location: Sitka, Alaska
Employment Type: Contract (13 weeks)
Shift: Monday to Thursday, 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM (no lunch break) or 8:00 AM - 5:30 PM (with 30-minute lunch break)
Hours per Week: 36
Job Summary
Provide comprehensive nursing care to infusion patients, collaborating with a multidisciplinary team. Responsibilities include overseeing infusion referrals, coordinating appointments, monitoring patient reactions, administering specialty IV fluids, maintaining IV access devices, and educating patients and families on post-discharge care. Participate in staff development and maintain current professional knowledge in oncology/infusion nursing.
Key Responsibilities
- Facilitate and oversee infusion patient referrals and coordinate appointment scheduling.
- Document and communicate patient test results and infusion reactions to providers.
- Administer specialty IV fluids via peripheral or central catheters following prescribed orders.
- Maintain central venous catheters (CVC), peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC), and other IV access devices per guidelines.
- Assess and prepare patients for infusion therapy, including reviewing orders and coordinating with physicians and pharmacy.
- Participate in patient care meetings and provide guidance to clinic staff to ensure quality care flow.
- Maintain a safe and therapeutic environment and respond promptly to emergency situations.
- Educate patients and families about infusion care and post-discharge instructions.
- Uphold confidentiality, professional ethics, and facility policies.
Required Qualifications
- Current, full, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in Alaska.
- Direct hire candidates must have applied for an Alaska nursing license before the start date.
- Agency staff must have an active Alaska RN license.
- Education required to obtain a valid RN license in Alaska.
- BLS and ACLS certification.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Clinical competency must be demonstrated within 3 months of hire and every three years thereafter.
Experience
- Minimum 2 years of nursing experience preferred (1 year clinical nursing experience preferred, with emphasis on infusion specialty).
- Prior experience in infusion nursing or related specialty preferred.
Knowledge and Skills
- Ability to develop individualized nursing care plans using nursing information.
- Knowledge of regulatory documentation requirements and accurate clinical data recording.
- Understanding of nursing care across specialties including pediatrics, internal medicine, critical care, emergency medicine, mental health, geriatrics, and palliative care.
- Knowledge of disease processes, therapeutic nursing interventions, and pharmacology including medication effects and adverse reactions.
- Skilled in operating and maintaining specialized medical devices such as cardiac monitors, IV infusion pumps, central lines, and phlebotomy equipment.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Leadership skills in a healthcare environment.
- Ability to manage multiple patients and high patient volumes.
- Critical thinking and independent decision-making skills.
- Ability to recognize and respond to adverse signs and emergency situations promptly.
- Strong customer service orientation with a patient-centered approach.
Physical Demands
- Frequent standing, walking, sitting, and use of hands and arms.
- Occasional climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling.
- Must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 lbs.
- Regularly required to talk and hear.
Additional Information
- Must have current Alaska nursing license to submit application.
- Flu vaccine required.
- Start date contingent on timely fingerprint processing (fingerprints must be mailed within 2-3 days of appointment to avoid delays).
- Candidates must live at least 50 miles away from the facility location.
- Housing and flights are not provided.
