ICU Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position

Location: San Francisco, California
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 25 weeks


Job Description

  • Float pool position: ICU RNs will float across all Transitional Care Units (TCUs), ICUs, Emergency Department (ED), and Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU).
  • Rotating 12-hour day/night shifts on a 4-week schedule cycle; shift may change each cycle based on need.
  • Must be able to float to multiple facilities and departments within the system.
  • Candidates should confirm experience with ECMO, IABP, Impella, LVAD, CRRT, and PA Catheters for faster processing.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in California.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
  • Minimum 2 years of ICU (Intensive Care Unit) experience, with ICU experience within the last year.
  • Certifications:
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) issued by the American Heart Association
    • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
  • Experience with ECMO, IABP, Impella, LVAD, CRRT, and PA Catheter.

Preferred Qualifications

  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification.

Shift Details

  • 12-hour shifts, either day (7:00 AM – 7:30 PM) or night (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM).
  • 36 hours per week (3 shifts per week).

Required Documentation & Compliance

  • Valid government-issued photo ID matching professional license (Driver’s License, State ID, or US Passport).
  • Background checks including 7-year criminal history, EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG, Sex Offender Search, and Education Verification.
  • Education verification or copy of diploma/transcript.
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start, including physician statement of fitness to work.
  • Drug testing: Standard 9-panel (excluding THC) within 30 days of start, renewed every 2 years.
  • Immunizations and titers:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccine within 10 years (no declinations accepted except medical exemptions).
    • Two negative TB tests (PPD, QuantiFERON, or T-Spot) with specific timing requirements.
    • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella: IGG titers or 2 vaccines required.
    • Hepatitis B: Titer, series, or declination (declination must be signed within 1 year).
    • Varicella: IGG titer or 2 vaccines required (history of disease not accepted).
    • Seasonal flu vaccine or facility-specific declination required during flu season (Nov-Apr).
  • Fit mask test within 1 year of start (specific approved masks required).
  • Pass/fail Telemetry exam on first day for applicable units.
  • Medication and unit-specific competency exams with minimum 80% passing score, completed within 12 months prior to start.
  • Annual Cyber Security Awareness Training and HIPAA Healthcare Provider Module with passing scores required.
  • Completion of unit-specific skills checklist annually.
  • Completion of facility-specific learning modules prior to or on Day 1 depending on start day.

Additional Important Information

  • Candidates must complete a COVID-19 questionnaire prior to start; COVID vaccination is strongly recommended but not required.
  • Candidates must complete UCSF-specific forms including emergency contact information and various attestations.
  • Management of Assaultive Behavior (MAB) and Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) may be required depending on unit assignment.
  • Pass/fail testing includes EKG and medication exams; calculators are not allowed during Telemetry test.
  • Candidates with prior UCSF experience within 6 months may be exempt from some training modules.
  • References and work history verification covering 7 years are required; gaps over 30 days must be explained.
  • Candidates must be prepared to comply with all facility-specific policies and procedures, including parking and uniform guidelines.
