Registered Nurse – PCU (Progressive Care Unit) – Night Shift

Location: Columbus, Ohio
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Details

  • Shift: Nights, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
  • Schedule: Weekdays and some weekends, rotating holidays
  • Unit: Progressive Care Unit (PCU) – Lower acuity cardiac patients (cardiac experience preferred)
  • Patient Ratio: Approximately 1 nurse to 3 patients
  • Floating: Required to float within units of equivalent or lower acuity

Required Experience & Skills

  • Minimum 2 years of PCU experience, including experience within the last year
  • Experience in an inpatient setting
  • Skills required: IV start, Telemetry (Tele) monitoring
  • Experience with EPIC electronic health record system

Required Certifications & Licenses

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Ohio
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification

Education

  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing

Background & Compliance Requirements

  • 7-year criminal background check within 90 days of start, including SS trace, counties lived/worked, nationwide check, sex offender registry, and MVR if driving is required
  • FBI and BCI fingerprinting with specific Ohio code (3701.881) required within 1 year of start
  • Education verification: Graduate of an accredited nursing program (CCNE, ACEN, or NLN CNEA)
  • Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start (includes amphetamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, cannabinoids, cocaine, methadone, methaqualone, opiates, PCP, propoxyphene)
  • Employment application and skills checklist required
  • Two professional references required (at least one from a manager or formal leadership)

Health & Immunization Requirements

  • Physical exam within 1 year of start confirming good health and free of contagious disease
  • Fit mask test annually for inpatient/patient-facing roles (valid for assignment length)
  • Immunizations or titers required:
    • Tdap (adult dose after age 11/12)
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year (or TB questionnaire)
    • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella: 2 MMR vaccines or positive titer
    • Hepatitis B: Titer or 3-vaccine series (declination acceptable)
    • Varicella: 2 vaccines or positive titer (medical exemption requires documentation)
    • Seasonal flu vaccine or declination during flu season (10/1–3/31)

Competency & Testing Requirements

  • Medication/pharmacology competency exam prior to start
  • Unit-specific competency exam required
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required within 1 year of start and updated annually (minimum passing score 76%)

Additional Facility-Specific Requirements

  • Review and sign dress code and hand hygiene policy
  • Complete Confidential Fraud Waste Abuse and Compliance Reporting Mechanism form
  • Fraud, Waste, and Abuse training certificate required prior to start and updated annually
  • Annual orientation safety manual acknowledgement
  • License verification and NURSYS verification required within 30 days of start
  • NIH Stroke Certification may be required depending on unit (verify if applicable)

Notes

  • Prior travel experience is not explicitly required for this position.
  • Floating may require flexibility to work in other units with similar or lower acuity patients.
  • Candidates must be prepared for night shifts and rotating holiday schedules.
