Registered Nurse – General Medicine PCU (Ventilator Experience Required)
Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Schedule & Shift Details
- Shift: Day shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (6:45 AM – 7:15 PM)
- Weekend Requirement: Either every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts within a 6-week block
- Holiday Requirement: Must work one holiday during the 13-week contract
- Call-off Policy: Facility may call off 1 shift every 2 weeks
- Floating: Required to float within skillset
Unit & Patient Population
- Unit Type: Progressive Care Unit (PCU) with 10 PCU beds and 2 ICU beds
- Patient Types: Ventilator and trach-dependent patients, chronic respiratory failure, DKA, COPD, sepsis, suicide/overdose, renal failure
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: Typically 1:5, goal 1:4
- Telemetry: Remote telemetry monitors remain on unit; tele-sitting used to increase Patient Care Tech coverage
Required Clinical Skills
- Cardiac monitoring, emergency response, dysrhythmia interpretation/management
- IV therapy, phlebotomy, blood product administration, central and peripheral line care
- Medication administration including cardiac drips (no titration)
- Respiratory support: nasal cannula, oxygen administration, non-invasive airway management
- Ventilator care for chronic trach and vent patients
- Rapid Response and Code team activation
- Isolation precautions and telemetry settings across PCU, DOU, IMC, and stepdown units
Required Certifications
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) – AHA only
- BLS (Basic Life Support) – AHA only
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale) certification
Licensure & Experience Requirements
- Valid RN license in Virginia
- Minimum 1 year of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience within the last year
- Ventilator experience
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Experience with Epic electronic health record system
Documentation & Compliance Requirements
- Background Check: 7-year background check required within 1 year of start, covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years
- E-Verify or attestation required
- Education Verification: Proof of highest earned degree required (transcript or diploma)
- NURSYS verification required for RN license within 30 days of start
- Physical Exam: Within 1 year of start, confirming freedom from communicable diseases
- Drug Testing: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start
- Fit Testing: Fit test within 1 year of start, updated annually (masks 1860S, 1860, 1870+, 1804S acceptable)
- TB Testing: Negative PPD, QGold, or TSpot within 1 year; if past positive, clear chest X-ray within 1 year and annual TB questionnaire
- Immunizations: Proof of immunity or vaccination for Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
- Flu Vaccination: Not required but mask and declination form required if declined
- Photo for Badge: Professional photo required with plain background, no selfies or filters
- References: Two clinical references required (hospital evaluations accepted)
- Employment Application/Resume: Required
- Skills Checklist: Must be updated annually
- Orientation: Review of Contract Staff Orientation Manual prior to start (not required for inpatient RNs)
- Compliance and confidentiality agreements must be completed within 48 hours of signing
Additional Notes
- Drivers License/State ID with an address within 100 miles of the facility is required within 48 hours of signing
- Locals accepted under radius rule criteria
- Hospital is a large acute care Level I Trauma Center, Magnet-designated, and teaching hospital with advanced specialty care
